Woman Feeding Capitol Squirrels Agrees To Stop
State Officials Express Concern For Those With Peanut Allergies
UPDATED: 1:09 pm CDT April 7, 2009
MADISON, Wis. -- A Madison woman apologized on Monday for distributing peanuts to squirrels around the state Capitol after state officials warned against the practice for health reasons. The problem with what the unidentified woman was doing on the Capitol Park grounds near Martin Luther King Boulevard and East Main Street was the potential health risks the peanuts can cause for school children and other visitors who come to the Capitol. The state Department of Administration's facility director sent an e-mail warning tenants of the downtown building about the dangers those with peanut allergies face and asking the person feeding the squirrels to please stop."I think it would be really sad if a poor, little child picked up a peanut shell and sucked on it, but I also think kids should know not to pick stuff up off the dirty ground and put it in their mouth," said Nell Rogers. "You can't prevent people from trying to feed the squirrels."Local allergy groups are trying to educate others about the concerns. Sheree Godwin, of the Food Allergy Association of Wisconsin, said that they try to educate those with allergies how to deal with peanuts when they're out in the world."We try to teach them to be educated about what a peanut looks like. The real world just has peanuts out there, but I do think it's great that the Capitol is trying to take a proactive and think about food allergies."After the e-mail went out, the woman responsible came forward and agreed to stop.
