Why Isn't it Tasting Like it Should

Hi guys,

I'm a first time grower in coco and recently harvested some nice big bud/northern lights. I flushed for five days and dried for 5 days. The bud has pretty much dried out and when i've had a joint of it, it smokes nothing like it smells. I get a dirt/homegrown taste. It smokes smoothly all the way down with no black ash or other defects. Anybody know what this could possibly be. Please help, it smells so good.

The flush wasn't long enough, flushing is usually a 2 week minimum. Also you don't mention anything about curing, if you haven't cured you need to.

An faq about harvesting and curing can be found :leaf:Here:leaf:

If you're buds are way too dried out, you can put a piece of lettuce in the jar to re-moisten them up. Curing helps the sugars and chlorophyll metabolize properly.

Hope this helps.

I've read that with canna coco it generally only needs 5-10 flush.

I've put the bud into large glass jars and open them everday.

Wouldn't the ash go black and the spliff not really smoke if it wasn't flushed out properly.

If i used lettuce to remoisten the bud will it cause it the smoke to taste anything like it.

General rule of thumb regardless is 2 weeks min for me personally, but to each their own. The flush helps get rid of the rest of the nasties, but what really makes the smoke good is the cure. Even if you don't flush properly, if you cure for long enough it will be a damn decent smoke. The curing process affects potency, smell, taste and overall smoke quality.

The slower the cure the better, imagine it as a fine wine. The longer the wine is stored the better the quality. 1 month minimum on curing time.

As far as the lettuce no, it will not make it taste like lettuce. You may get a grassy smell, but that's ok. That smell will fade as the curing process goes along.

dude remoisten with fresh cannabis leaves. less chance of mold.
Not everyone has access to fresh cannabis leaves at all times. Lettuce is a good substitute when you don't have leaves. Just don't leave it in there too long, because yes it can and will mold. Leave the lettuce in long enough to re-moisten it and take it out.

Moistening the bud will make it slightly worse -probably.

I'd suggest a cure no less than 3 weeks. Which, when you include drying. Just figure one month minimum.

The cure never ends.

I agree with TeaTreeOil that the drying and curing process should take up to and possibly more than a month.

The best way to get a good smoke is to dry and cure as long as possible. Treat it as though it is still alive so it can burn up all the lingering nutrients and chlorophyl.

I'd suggest inorganic matter to moisten extremely dry bud. This is the only case in which you should moisten bud.

I've used two glass jars, one big and one small. The small one needs to completely fit into the bigger jar. Put a wet, not just damp/moist, not soaking wet, paper towel and line it around the big jar, or make a ring and put it in the bottom. Put the small jar inside the big jar. Seal the big jar air-tight, put in a dark cool place. Check daily. This process takes a few days, maximum.

To make sure mold doesn't grow, you can put just a few drops of regular white distilled vinegar with the water. I'd use vinegar and not bleach. Chlorine fumes... don't seem pleasing. You should also sterilize the jars. Either boiling water or water and bleach(10:1), rinse them out well if you use bleach. The water should also be filtered, distilled, or RO. Tap isn't ideal.

you dried WAY too fast. normally you trim you buds and hang them to dry.. this process takes about 1-2 weeks (or hang dry until you can snap the stem. once you can snap the stem by bending it this stage is over). the next step is your call. some people go from hanging to brown paper bags where the buds sit for another week or so, gently stirring them from day to day.. THEN you put them in mason jars and try to cure for at least 2-4 weeks before smoking. now you are ready to smoke properly cured bud..
you can skip the paper bag part but anything less than that is an un proper cure imo leaving you with shitty (or not yummy)tasting bud!

i wanted to add this.. may sound dumb, but if you dried in 5 days ya never know.. if you dry using dry heat like a space heater, stove, furnace etc, you will get a crap cure too. again, i only wanted to add this because i have no idea how you could have dried fresh bud in 5 days...
