Hey guys, I have a question. I have a 30" X 30" X 4ft. grow box i built out of plywood. Right now I have 1 - 100watt MH and about 8 CFL's in there flowering my babies but its just not working how i want it.

A buddy at work bought a 1000watt HPS bulb, ballast, and cool tube a couple years ago and only ran it for 1 month before he shut down and has agreed to trade me for a small veg box i have with a timer and he would take my 100watt mh.

my question is, does anyone know of a way to make it safe to have such a large light in my box? is anyone doing this?

my other buddy has a 400watt HPS in his box the same as mine and he has problems with heat and how close he can have his plants without burning.

I really want to have a better light and i dont have money to buy one right now. this light is a wicked deal and if i can make it work i would like to.

i got a 1000 hps in a room 3x5 and seems to work nicely. get a nice hood with exhaust. and you should be allright. only problem you might have is a heat issue.

ok so i decided to take the light from him. im going to rip apart my box tomorrow and build a wall halfway back in my shed. the box should end up somewhere around 3ft deep by 5ft wide by 6ft tall.

I will then hook up the 1000watt HPS light, along with my bathroom fan for outtake with a carbon scrubber im buying for $120. Im going to make 2 intakes and attach fans to them for better air intake. i will also have a walmart bought oscilating fan in the box for air circulation. hopefully this and being outside in a shed will be enough to keep the heat down.

I will be doing all of this tomorrow when the lights are off. its a couple hour project so im going to move my plants inside before the suns up and put them somewhere dark to help with the stress.

Ok i got exact measurements. can someone tell me if this space is big enough for a 1000watt HPS?

6ft wide X 40" deep X 68" tall

this is as large as i can get my grow box.

yep. just get some circulation going in there. or a fan cooled hood. or a fan blowing directly on the light.

its got a hood made half from some sort of reflective metal and the other half is glass. it has 2 6" holes on either side and i was going to just duct tape one of my smaller fans to the end of it. the box will be cooled with my bathroom fan for outtake and i will have an oscilating fan on a stand from walmart for circulation in the box. hopefully this works!

I run a 1000w in 4x5x5 area and it kicks ass... if you can keep the temps rite then you plants are going to grow very fast.

thats much better than your space you was starting off with. That seems like a good spot for a 1000.You will definately love the outcome.

yeah im thinking i will. the new grow area ive been working on today is the size i last said. ive been having problems with getting my fan to stay hung up so im going to mickey mouse it with some straps. The new area is nice and spacey. i dont have money to buy paint for the walls right now. i tried a flat white quick dry spraypaint but its not going on thick enough and it made me dizzy using it in the area. i might just go without a reflective wall and just hope the light is bright enough.

im off to walmart to get some more silicone for my mickey moused wall lol... its made of about 5 pieces of plywood. then all i have to do is set the light up with the timer and fans, drill an intake hole or 2... and put my plants back in from the cupboard in the house. YAY!

Your going to need to an A/C Unit in the shed if your planning on growing, and since you have a cool tube, and going to use a cool tube you shouldn't have that MUCH of an issuse with heat.
