HPS/MH Lights, Ballasts Questions, plz help

Hey everyone at RIU wats up!
When you buy the HPS light does it come with the ballast or do u buy that sepprate?

Totally new to the whole idea of lighting and been thinkin of buying a 400W HPS ,(since im gonna be growing soon enough!) , would it come with a "ballast" or does that come sepprate?

I guess the main use of the ballast is to stabalize the current ( plz correct me if im off). So if i bought the light for like $130.00 would it come with a ballast or would i need to buy that sepprately?

how much would i have to pay for a ballast if seprate?

Any gud websites where i could buy these things for a gud price? (Also hoping for quality)

Oh and one more question! What if i go with the t5 fluresents instead , would i need a ballast with that and how much would that cost me anyways?

well...you're gonna need to buy a ballast..then get the light..

HTGsupply has good deals on HPS lighting..I would recommend getting a digital ballast tho. better output..

most places, when you buy the ballast it comes with hood, socket, cord, and bulb.
make sure you have all those things, or youre system wont work. then you are going to have to look at ventilation to keep the area temps down..you want them under 80˚

About the cooling, im thinkin of keeping a fan blowing downwards on the light and the plants, u think thats gud enough ?any sugesstions?

mainly because it comes with mh conversion bulb(which i think is a bulb that works with this system so i dont have to buy a sepprate system!)

put the fan on the floor and blow the air up and onto the light. if you blow down it will be too hot on the plants. 400w lights and ballasts get much hotter then you think. how big is the room your gonna be using?

thats a good system...600W takes a lot of ventilation to keep cool. you might want to look at some of the can fans they have as well.

Do yourself a favor and just buy an HPS hood with a built in ballast with a mh conversion bulb.

the only thing bad about built in ballasts are heat issues..I had two 150s with built in ballasts and my lil area would get up to 90˚ if it wasnt venting properly.

i thought the same.. till i bought my buddies 400W built in ballast... shit weights 50 pounds. df. not worth it, and your wasting alot more power with a magnetic ballast instead of digital. iim cutting like 30 bux off my bill with the digi one.
i got a couple 150W built in ballasts. those are nice though. there not heavy, but they do crank some heat...... Pe@ce.

heyy thx man some gud info, but kinda expencive for me also im worryed about attracting the law , is it safe to buy like this? i think im just being paranoid !
