Any Motorcyle riders?

So I'm new here but this is the only forum I'm a member of right now so I figured I'd ask...

I've been a rider for about a year now and I'm getting pretty good at it IMO. I ride a Suzuki sv650 and I love every second of it. My question is this: Is riding on the freeway more or less dangerous than riding on the streets? I live in a big-ish city, but it's still possible to get around off of the freeway. I want to ride on the freeway, but my fiancee says it's too dangerous and she 'won't allow it'.

In her mind, more speed=more danger, but I think that there is more danger on regular roads with stop signs and lights and parking on the sides of the street and people turning left on you and all that junk.

What do you guys think?

Oh, and do any of you guys smoke and ride? I've been taking my car everywhere when I smoke, but that means that my smoking buddies have not seen my bike.

I would say anywhere is just as dangerous. Depending on time of day amoutn of traffic and such. Ive only crashed once and broke my collar bone and it was on a side road goin 10 mph. the week before i was riding wheelies at 75mph on the highway. (gsxr1000)

Im a big time rider and i think its pretty safe if you are a deffensive rider. I ride a yamaha R1 2008 and have had some close calls but with all that power i can get out of a bad situation real quick I feel like riding on the highway is way more safe as well because you are less likely to get tboned like you would going through an intersection.

Welcome to RIU. Enjoy! I ride bikes and the freeway can be more dangerous when there is a lot of traffic. People dont pay much attention to bikes in heavy traffic. Most of the time its the street thats more dangerous because people run red lights and stop signs, they pull out right in front of you, and cut you off like you are not even there. So I would have to say you have to be more careful riding on the street. GSXR750R.

The Suzuki SV650 is a very good commuter bike and it handles fine on the freeway. Freeways are fine you just got to get used to the speed and you will feel comfortable. Make sure you don't ride in peoples blind spot and try to be very aware. Just find a lane that you like and stay in it. Always leave yourself a out when you ride. I ride after I've smoked weed, I just don't ride too quick. (600 cc 4 cylinder bullet bike).

Riding a motorcycle anywhere is dangerous because of the limited protection and that fact that the cagers don't look for you and don't give a shit about you.
Freeway or street all pose certain dangers.
If you ride like every ones out to kill you you'll have a better chance of surviving.
I seldom ride wasted but when I do I love it.

Well it looks like we're 5/5 in favor of highway riding. The girl won't hear it though. What she's saying is that if anything were to happen, I would "definitely die" on the freeway and then be run over repeatedly.

Always wear a bright color when riding, especially on the freeway, makes you easier to see than if you're wearing all dark colors.

If you think someone is looking at you but not really seeing you, wave at them, it gets their attention and instead of running you over, they're thinking of how they know you.

I've got a 250 Ninja. Definitely underpowered for some situations but it is a really fun bike and you don't have to worry about getting away from you.

Ok so if your going over 35 mph, your helmet basically becomes worthless in event of a crash...So yeah the highway is more dangerous. Not to mention if you happen to get in an accident, you will SLIDE to a stop.

But it also depends how safe of a rider you are. I grew up with motorcross and supercross so naturally i love to speed and do tricks. ...The dumbest thing ive done was etheir, Riding a wheelie accross Harve de grace bridge at 140mph, or Topping the bike out with in the first week i purchased it off the showroom floor. Speedo said 187...

I was 18 and ignorant of the concequences. Now at 24 im looking into Eduro bikes.

I never felt like I was in more danger when I was on the freeway. I never rode in heavy traffic on the freeway though. At least you don't have to worry about people pulling out in front of you.

Don't take it out in heavy traffic first and just keep an eye out and you'll be fine.

I've been looking for a while. Cash is tight so I've been looking for a wrecked 6 that I can make a street fighter out of.

I've also got a '72 350 Suzuki 2-stroke that I'm building a cafe racer style bike out of. I've put a set of clip-on bars on it and moved the pegs back.

Lol your kidding right? People never see motorcyclists... hell the first day i had my bike i counted being cut off 7 times. And thats just as bad imo.
