did i fuck up

ok so i planted a seed and it sprouted out of the ground on 2-5-09. i had in a 4in pot filled with dirt from my back yard. it was mostly clay dirt so today (2-20-09) i decided i should transplant it into another 4in pot with 50/50 earthgrow top soil and scotts potting soil.
the root ball was very small probably 1in around the base of the plant, but had these roots that were pretty long hanging out the bottom, about 3in. after emptying the dirt out of the old pot i found out that those roots went all the way to the bottom of the old pot and were all around on the bottom. they were not tranfered to the new pot.

do you guys think the plant will be ok or do you think i hurt it by riupping out all the roots. there was about 3 inches of roots that i tranfered to the new pot.
i guess time will tell me if it dies or not. just wanted to see if the potting soil and top soil im using is a good choice and if the plant will survive.

It actually doesn't look all that bad. Give it time to recover and it just might flourish....assuming you don't fuck up some more.

It will likely be fine but it may have slightly slower growth for a short period of time.

What happened to you is one of the reasons why I never repot. I start out my germed beans in the largest pot size that I am using for a grow and I never have to handle them other than to sometimes move them around if the lighting/growth seems uneven and I want to move one or some more directly under light and of course to water and feed them but I NEVER have to actually handle the plants themselves, only the pots that contain the plants.

Another reason is that as soon as roots begin to circle a pot the plant is under stress and it only increases as the circling gets worse and the root-ball grows more dense so that is avoided if from the beginning growing in a pot that is at least as large if not larger than your root-ball will ever need or at least greatly reduced and put off until much later in the growth of the plants if the largest size pot you are using is not quite large enough for the fully grown root-ball.

Another reason is while much or at least some of the soil is not being used by roots it still holds moisture and as the parts of your soil become dried out due to plants using the moisture and evaporation the moisture from the other unused soil will wick towards the drier soil so your plants will then get the moisture they need and you do not have to water as often and if for some reason you forget or cannot water for an extra day or two the moisture that will sick to the drier portions of your soil can be enough to get you by without your plants becoming wilted.

It works well for me but many people do not agree with doing things that way so I say do what you are the most comfortable with and have the most confidence in.

haha yea i just wanted to get it out of that clay dirt and into some good soil. if it doesnt die ill post in this thread will another picture. i hope it lives. its gonna be my mother for an aeroponics system i want to start. it already smells good.

Would I be wrong to assume that you must have germed a feminized seed? If not how do you know its sex already?

yea after i got it in the 4 in pot and back in the room i was like shit, i should have put it in a 2 gal pot. i guess i have to f up again in a couple weeks when i put it in a larger pot. i hope the root ball will get bigger in this soil so it wont be such a problem later on.

also does anyone else use the earth grow top soil and scotts potting soil? i didnt really know what to get while i was at home depot so i got what looked the best and i heard that MG wasnt good for weed. the earth grow top soil has no nutes or plant foods in it... it was the only stuff i could find that didnt.

well i actually do not know yet. if its male ill have to go buy a clone from a dispensary. it was a seed i got from a friend who said it was OG kush, but he wasnt sure because it was old... it seemed to be doing good. lets hope she keeps doing good.

I doubt very much it's gonna die mate, as long as there was still some root on it then it'll be fine. It's at a stage in it's life where producing roots is pretty high in it's priorities, so it should continue to do so.

And the bright side is you have it in some decent soil now.

If you ever find yourself in the same situation (Which I doubt you will!) then holding the root ball/soil under a tap and washing away your old soil before replanting is a much safer bet. Transplanting into a bigger pot and not disturbing the root zone would be safer still.

When you see multiple roots at the bottom of the 4 inch pot, just 3/4 fill your new pot with soil, slide the plant carefully out of the 4inch pot and place it into the new soil.Then just fiil the sides with sopikl and your away. You don't need to interfere with the old soil.

I noticed you say you were planning to keep this as a mother? If this is the case I would reccomend a larger pot than 2 Gal. You would be better of with at least a 4 Gal pot to provide enough root space and prevent your mom becoming root bound.

yea thats what i was hoping for. the better soil i hope will make it florish. this is my first time trying to grow so far its been good, and long. watching the damn plant grow is more boring than watching paint dry. paint atleast dries in a day.... lol im gonna wait until its about 3 or 4 feet tall before i put it into flower. that is if i dont decide to keep it as a mother. i think ill make clone and flower this one to see if its any good... it was an unknown seed so im not even sure if its good stuff.

ok so the plant is doing good still and is nice and green and has started getting bigger the past week. but a problem ive been having is that 2 of the leave on opposite sides of the plant are twisting.. everything else looks to be fine so i havent been worried about it, but im wondering whats causing it.
