NOT Enough Growth

OK, so i have already germinated my seeds, and they have sprouted...

Lighting-2 t12 40 watt fl, walls lined with mylar.
Soil-miracle grow or store bought equivalent soil, mixed 50-50 with Sphagnum peat moss.

Jan 23 2009- they are in the little seedling house.... ok great dandy.....

once i got a little more growth i transplanted to individual plants and doubled on the fl light.. also getting two Plant growth bulbs, dont know the exact specs but lights are MUCH MUCH more on the red side of the spectrum.

HOWEVER 2 weeks later not much growth...

am i just being over cautious?????

also some of the sprouts are turning yellow on the bottem plants, after reading this forum quite thoroughly for the last few weeks im assuming its a nitrogen defficiency, so i bought some 18-18-18 veg food and gave them the reccomended ppm.

IS it too early to start feeding, and yes i know i have to get off the flouro tubes and get the HPS its just im having trouble finding a way to wire it, im no where near an electrician and im in an OLD house with OLD wiring.


Anyway im putting pics up in order, any hints or tips are greatly appreciated, i am also throwing up pics of the setup, it has been improved since pics were taken though(pics were taken while sprouts are very young)

they look a little lanky. theyre prolly not getting enough light. the light theyre getting is blue spectrum light too. you might want to add a red spectrum light to them. and move the light so there no further than 2 inches fron the apical meristem (the growing tip).

about the HPS light. check HTG (hightecgarden.com) they have cheaper HPS systems that will plug streight into a 120 V wall outlet with no problems. just make sure your venting so the box doesnt get too hot. and your plants need to be lower than 90 degrees as well.

your soil looks bad - I see no perlite - that means your plants roots aren't getting enough air and thus cannot grow

also your pots are quite small

transplant using some quality soil mix with perlite and they will get better

right now you cannot change their soil, so transplanting into bigger pots and better soil is all you can do

also don't overwater, water when the top of the pot gets completely dry, cuz you totally kill oxygen supply to the roots

Does your soil have fertilizer in it, like the slow release fertilizer some soil has in it? New/young plants should not be fertilized. Some people will say three weeks and others will say five weeks and others have different opinions but for at least three to four weeks don’t feed them or you will burn them. So the answer to your question of is it to soon to feed them would be yes and if your soil had slow release fertilizer in it then you have a problem there. Maybe I did not see things clearly in the pics but it looked like there was a bit of a dry/burned/toasted curled up end to one leaf and that could be what is causing it.

Also how often do you water? Not that I think you have a watering problem but as much info as possible makes it easier for people to guess what might be going on.

Ive been misting the plants and the top of the soil daily, and deep watering every 2 -3 days. and i do reach my finger a good 3-4 inches under to top of the soil and it still seems dry/dusty..???????? next time/generation around im deffinately going to try hydroponics..

AND to Brick Top i do believe the soil did have some type of slow release fert./moisture control.

Also later today i am going to buy between 4-8 CFL's to add in the mix.......... is it really nessiscary right now.? or should i just wait to see what happens.

ok, just to throw more pics up i took some of the newer setup, i stil have the 2 4ft floro tubes i just need to find a way to mount to the wall... but for now i have 4 cfls 125w.... also it seems the more underdevelloped plants have shrivelled and died... so im down to two but the two i have are looking nice anyway...

blue spectrum light is for vegetative growth, the red is for flowering

ok, so now one of the last two left is turning all yellow and drooping BUT they are way to young to have a nitro def. any pointers?

The yellowing does look like an N deficiency, but this young, in pre fertilized soil, I doubt it's a lack of availability. What's your PH? The N could be locked out.

i dont know to be honest..... i bought a brandie new electronic PH reader, i followed the instructions... but couldnt get the damn needle to move.....MEANING: A.) what i bought was a piece of shit, B.) im an idiot or C.) my PH is really at 8!!?? like i said i followed the directions on how to read it..... soaked the soil and the needled didnt move so..... i dont know.

Those analog testers are not the best. Although it wouldn't be uncommon for tap water to be in the mid to upper 7's. If you can afford it you should pick up a good PH pen. The expense is well worth the piece of mind. It's one of most important tools in your grow.

Uploading new pics...
as you can see one of the two left is doing very well, still getting GREAT growth and nice a greeen, however that other one is still dying ive tried to fix the PH, figuring its too high and blocking out all the nutes...stilllll no luck...

the first and fourth are the same plant and the middle two are the same plant.


Any tips...??? this plant is dying more each day!!!!!
