Are Autoflower Strains Still Worth It in 2024?

Hey everyone! I've been hearing a lot of different opinions about autoflower strains lately. Some folks say they're fantastic for quick and easy grows, while others believe they don't yield as much or have the same potency as photoperiod strains.

For those who have grown autos recently:

1. Are autoflowers still a solid choice for beginners in 2024?
2. Have newer genetics really improved their potency and yield?
3. Do they still finish faster than photoperiods?

I'm thinking about trying autos for my next grow, but I want to make sure they're worth it with all the new options available. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

1. Autoflowers aren't necessarily for beginners, they just get marketed that way. Autos can be advantageous when you want to flower outside and not have to push into October, November, December. They're also great indoors when you have a situation where you can't provide 12 hours of absolute darkness. And some people just like them and think they're cool.

2. I personally don't think any "new" genetics are giving you better yields or potency compared to prevalent strains in the 90's. If anything, the weed market is flooded with a lot of bland, but tasty and frosty weed. Sometimes not even tasty.

3. Faster from seed, maybe. Autos are hardly any faster than someone with photo clones and a dialed-in grow op.

Indoor or outdoor?
I think feminized photo is a much better approach for indoors, if you want potency and big yields.
Autos are really practical for outdoors if you live in the northern latitude.

Faster from seed, maybe. Autos are hardly any faster than someone with photo clones and a dialed-in grow op.

Sounds accurate. Clones from a good photo mother will produce a quick turn around.

Hypothetically.
Clones take 1 week to root.
Transplant and veg 2 weeks before starting 12/12. Thats 3 weeks before it start flowering. Im not sure if an auto can flower that quickly. It is possible. Someone with a lot of auto experience will eventually chime in and help OP obtain a more well rounded perspective on the matter.

1. Not really unless you have grown other plants before and have some general understanding

2. From the early days for sure! There are the odd strains which are just as strong as a photoperiod. Yields depend on a lot but my personal best is 35oz from a 4x4 tent

3. From seed yes. Unless you keep photo clones autos are faster. Mine typically finish in 11-13 weeks

If you do try them make sure you get some good genetics. Bad autos are horrible lol

Rocbud is a little gem. Everything I’ve grown from him has been stellar! Mephisto too is really solid and fastbuds are ok but phenotype is a lottery with them.

If you regularly grown photos just pop a couple autos in with them in veg to test it out?

They’re fun if you’ve got extra space in your veg tent/room, I’ve had some smoke and yield as well as photo plants, I’ve had a few that were meh. I dislike their unpredictable size though
