I'm currently growing two landrace based strains. Malawi from Ace seeds, and Coastal Seeds, Columbian x American Skunk.
I just pollinated the Malawi I'm growing, with Sensi's Shiva Skunk, so that gives me two strains with short genetic trees.
My goal for awhile now, has been to "get back to basics". Simple two way crosses, from landraces, or "anchor" strains. I loved the strains from the 80s-90s when breeding was hot in Amsterdam and No California! Lots of those guys in Cali, formed the breeders in Holland and viceversa back then.

Finding a nice phenotype and making an S1 is not breeding!

We are losing our Canibus roots, and our search for high THC is like drinking from a "Spodie" where everyone pours their liquor in.
Taking a phenotype from a genetic tree of 100s of strains, crossed with another phenotype from 100s of strains, is just creating an homogenized cannabis culture.

I can get high on 17-20% quality smoke with a great terpene profile, just as much as a 28% strain.
It's like the difference between drinking everclear, or a fine wine. You can get just as buzzed off both. Most these hybrids nowadays are so muddled, I can barely tell the difference. I'm not saying I don't love some of the new strains, I'm saying the genetics has ALWAYS been there, but is getting harder and harder to sort out.
I am going to drop the Burmese IBL next.

I collect a lot of older, "anchor" strains. I like the classics and their potential for breeding. Even Swerve, at Cali Conn had some great, Cannibus Cup winners. I have a few of those, like SFV OG, Boss Hogg, Tahoe OG, etc...
I like Bodhi gear because they are a lot of F1s and show variation, so sorting them out is fun.
I like the nostalgia of the old classics, (I'm 62 and smoked them), and the terpene profiles seemed so distinct. I remember Thai sticks in the 80s, and the earthy, spicey, pepper, cinnamon type flavor. I can't describe it, but haven't smelled anything like it in years.
I remember my first Afghan indica, stinking up the car so bad, after I scored an 1/8th, and I drove home with the windows down!
I'm hoping to find, and re-vitalize some of these old classics, and maybe make a few of my own, with some landraces.

@MeOhMyOhio that's DEEP. Hell, I'm just trying to get my first grow since the early 80's to the finish line without killing them. Sure nice to see the guys and gals who are now working on these types of issues to embrace the new while still searching for the O.G. .

Where did you get the sfv og? Ive been developing one strain for several years now. It is mtf x sfv og.

I crossed the Matanuska with a male SFV OG because both strains performed phenomenal out here in the PNW. Ive grown them indoors, outdoors, and greenhouse.

I made at least a dozen of f1 hybrids with big bud, white widow, skunk #1, early skunk, silver haze, all from sensi seeds. They were all great for indoor, but the only cross that did well in a greenhouse was the Silver Haze. Unfortunately I lost those seeds due to bad storage. Im planning to get some more silver haze seeds and cross it with the strain im working on.

Those all sound great! That Sensi stock is the old school building blocks of a lot of todays phenotypes. Keep up the good work. That's my type of breeding! A genetic tree with only a few branches.

This is the Malawi girl, out of the tent. She is spending the night in the closet away from the tent for the night. I'll mist the branch with water in the morning, and put her back in the tent.
She has been flowering for 8 weeks now, but keeps swelling and swelling. I started flowering it at 3 weeks in veg. It stretched 5 times its height. The Shiva Skunk male I used was a stout, bushy, tight one. I'm hoping together it makes a strong hybrid, that finishes in 10 weeks or so.

That's a pregnant calyx! I'm hoping to see some of those in a month or so!
The white pistils are browning and curling in on the branch I brushed. I'm sure the pollen took. Now it's a waiting game.
The feeling of growing something you made yourself is very rewarding. Spending years refining and making filial generations is even more rewarding! Keep up the great work.

Here is todays look at the perpetual. Its a bit crowded for a few more days. I had to put a plant in a few days ago, to keep the timing going. The Columbian x Skunk in the back right will come down on Sunday, and everything will scoot over and space out. I'm starting to adapt my topping, training, to maximize canopy spread. These past 8 months are my first tent grow, LED light grow, and I'm working out the light distribution and canopy management.
The last three plants I put in, all got topped, multiple times.

That Coatal seeds, Columbian x Skunk is a weird plant. It grew with great vigor, took off and stacked buds quickly, and then some leaves started fading to purple about 6 weeks into flower. I thought it was a bit early, but after reading some other grower's experiences, it finishes in 9-10 weeks!
I did some pics of the trichomes today, and sure enough, it's cloudy and nearly ripe.
It's a nice plant, but has been finicky and sensitive to over feeding. It seems to prefer lower EC than some other strains. The Malawi I'm growing seems to be similar in feed requirements.

This, right here. Too much cross breeding without a plan or a direction is just muddying the waters, not making anything new. There are soooooo many people out there chucking pollen who have absolutely no fucking idea what they're doing; they're just slapping something together to get a new name on it and "BE A BREEDER, BRAH!!"

There are some craftsmen out there but they're hard to find and they get ripped off so much it's often not with it to spend years creating something unique.

And that's a damn shame.

I want "The Bear" of breeders; someone obsessive, driven, know what they're looking for and uncompromising in their drive for it.

I'm not whining; it's high time this industry stopped tolerating amateurs quite so easily.

There are soooooo many people out there chucking pollen who have absolutely no fucking idea what they're doing; they're just slapping something together to get a new name on it and "BE A BREEDER, BRAH!!"

There are some craftsmen out there but they're hard to find and they get ripped off so much it's often not with it to spend years creating something unique.

I'm not whining; it's high time this industry stopped tolerating amateurs quite so easily.

It's nearly impossible to isolate, or stabilize, specific gene traits with multiple genetic branches. You can breed a Yorkshire Terrior to a Heinz 57 mutt, and no matter how many filial generations of puppies you breed, you will never make it a Yorkie again.
Recessive genes will express for ever. The more branches, the more variation.

Its funny you refer to, "the Bear". You know me personally. I am that obsessed chef!
Many of the plot lines in that series mimick my own experiences. The only reason I quit growing for 8 years is, a wealthy client made me an offer I couldn't refuse and I went to live on his estate.

I'm retired now, and need to focus my obsessive nature on new things. For me, it's like being a chef. I CAN'T make a great three layer cake starting with brownie mix!

I'm not growing for income, just looking for strains and specific terpene profiles, buzz, taste, etc... I'm growing to make strains I like to smoke. Drinking grain alcohol gets you fucked up, but I'm looking for wine made from grapes grown in a specific region.
Everything is so muddled, it's just a random pheno search now. Don't get me wrong! I like growing some of these crazy hybrids. Its like buying a lottery scratcher ticket. Sometimes you scratch off a $100 winner, but almost NO ONE hits the jackpot.

It's funny....I have 8 sprouts of two strains from Bodhi seeds. Even in their first leaf sets, they already look different. I can see 3 different expressions already!
