Emmanuel Macron warned Western powers against showing any signs of weakness to Russia as he reiterated his position that sending Western troops into Ukraine shouldn't be ruled out. The French President admitted, however, that today’s situation doesn’t require it.

French president Emmanuel Macron tells Putin 'WE are a nuclear power and WE are ready' in latest WW3 rhetoric as he responds to Russian leader's threats about using nukes.

'The metamorphosis of Emmanuel Macron, the dove become hawk,' said the Le Monde daily this week.

With history repeating itself there's a tiny yet above zero chance the Russians will burn Moscow again in a war against France.

Meanwhile in Germany:

Parliament’s lower house, or Bundestag, rejected the opposition Union bloc’s motion by 495 votes to 190, with five abstentions.

Meanwhile in NL: Several parties ask Rutte to encourage the Germans to supply Taurus missiles to Ukraine, buy them from them if needed so we can give them instead. Given the opposition in Germany, that's not a bad idea, preferably with a coalition of nations. Not sure how that solves the problem the Germans say is the problem.

Ukraine’s war strategy: Survive 2024 to win in 2025
Kyiv needs arms and ammunition from its allies if it is to stave off Russian attacks over the coming months.

Ukraine has an ambitious military goal for this year — hold on.

It's the third year of the country's full-scale war with Russia and a decade since Moscow illegally annexed Crimea and set off a conflict in eastern Ukraine. After despair at the initial attack, followed by soaring hopes for a quick reversal, the facts on the front line now point to a year of stagnation.

Ukraine's soldiers are exhausted and its military is running short of artillery ammunition and air defense rockets, while weapons like F-16 fighter jets and the U.S.-made MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) have yet to arrive in significant numbers.

Russia says its production of artillery shells has soared
MOSCOW, March 21 (Reuters) - Russia's defence minister said on Thursday that artillery shell production had risen by nearly 2.5 times in the past year, while artillery component production had soared by a factor of 22 as Moscow races to rearm faster than the West can supply Ukraine.

Russia's current dominance in artillery production is a factor that could help decide the course of the Ukraine war - which is largely fought with artillery and drones - at a time when the West fears Russia is set for more battlefield wins.

So,

Russia is devoting what remains of its weakening economy to producing war material in an all out effort of invading a neighbor that sought only to defend its own territory. While Russian citizen soldiers, who were forced into service, die daily by the thousands due to an outdated strategy that use waves of men to overcome minor defense positions of dubious strategic value, Russia's civilian population experience ever-growing police state crackdowns on freedom and their standard of living gets worse and worse even as they lose heating in buildings due to failing infrastructure. This can continue for several years but is not sustainable.

If Russia eventually defeats Ukrainian defenses what then? Shattered economy. Failing infrastructure. Basics of food, shelter, clothing scarce. But an intact world class military industrial economy operating at full capacity and an experienced, war hardened military. Putin cannot allow those men to return home with no jobs waiting for them and no prospects or means of supporting them while the economy shifts back to peacetime. Think of what that would mean to his home guard? The only answer for Putin and his dream of Imperial Russia is to feed their army and people through conquest and the spoils of war. Putin will have to invade and pillage his neighbors. Its the only tool he will have available to him. Military expansion will be necessary for Putin's own survival if not his people's.

I don't know what will happen in the short term. But in the long term, if the US doesn't help Ukraine to stop Russia and soon, we will eventually have to do so at much higher cost.

Poland should "invade" the western part of Ukraine up to against Belarus. Ukrainian's withdraw to conserve its troops, sporadic fighting between Poland and Ukraine, mainly rifle rounds shot over each side's heads. With limited resources Ukraine will man the Poland front at one man per mile in the standoff. This does complicate the airbase thing but the men relieved from the Poland areas could be redeployed elsewhere. Russia has said multiple times Poland will take its old territory back, maybe oblige them on it?

I‘m dropping this here because it relates to his recent troops on the ground and nukes comments.

Anything Macron does sparks mixed reactions, obviously. Too easy to judge and ridicule it, it’s supposedly actually how he excercises twice a week.

Sandrine Rousseau, a member of parliament for EELV, called out the president for the macho image portrayed in the photos. “What misery of politics. What a defeat for progressivism. And what poverty of political communication,” wrote Rousseau in a post on X.

So dramatic… The message, more specifically the timing, is not to impress anyone with his boxing skills or portray himself as a macho type to the French public anymore than he’s already perceived to be. Not he’s riding a horse without a shirt.

This guy gets it:

The message is intended for Vladimir Putin,” [Philippe Moreau-Chevrolet, expert in political communication and professor at the Sciences-Po university in Paris] said, explaining that the president wants to show that he is “in the fight.

Not just for Putin though, for all Russians. Every signal towards Russia they need to gtfo of Ukraine and stop working towards WW3 is good thing, this is just another signal from different angle.

“Several Russian financial, economic, and military indicators suggest that Russia is preparing for a large-scale conventional conflict with NATO, not imminently but likely on a shorter timeline than what some Western analysts have initially posited.”

“The Russian military continues to undertake structural reforms to simultaneously support the war in Ukraine while expanding Russia’s conventional capabilities in the long term in preparation for a potential future large-scale conflict with NATO.”

As Ukraine came under heavy shelling, the Financial Times reported that Washington had urged Kyiv to halt drone strikes on Russian energy infrastructure for fear of driving up global oil prices.

Citing sources with knowledge of the matter, the Financial Times reported that US officials were worried that a further rise in the country’s petrol prices could weaken Joe Biden ratings and undermine his campaign to win a second term as president.

Commenting on the Financial Times report, Olha Stefanishyna, Ukraine’s deputy prime minister for European and Euro-Atlantic integration said that her country “understands the appeals of our American partners.

“At the same time, we are fighting with the capabilities, resources and practices that we have today,” Stefanishyna said during the Kyiv Security Forum on Friday.

The report has led to anger in Ukraine and is likely to cause more friction between Kyiv and its western allies.

“Stop projecting fear! Ukraine should and will strike into Moscovian oil refineries. This is the most effective energy sanction so far,” wrote Daria Kaleniuk, the executive director of Ukraine’s Anti-Corruption Action Centre, on X.

As there are sanctions against buying rooshin oil how does knocking out their refineries raise oil prices? Now that I think about it I guess if the countries still buying their oil can't get it from them they will have to get it elsewhere increasing demand.

Taking the high road is costing the Ukrainians bigly. They should have been knocking out power to their cities earlier in the winter to bring more of the war to the people but then that just makes more support for pootin so they can't win for losing.

Damn the f'n repubs for holding up munitions for the UA! They are all guilty of murder in my eyes.

:peace:

They were just saying that was how Putin originally took power too. Like the troll he is, it would not be a big surprise that he just recycles his old bits.

it would be a big surprise if he did that, especially right after an supposed election (insert giggle here)

the russian spin on this is gonna get interesting in the next 48hrs
The funny thing is this morning the attack on Ukraine had barely a mention in Russia. Which seems odd as they normally would have many articles saying how great the Russian army is.
