Whats the total cost?

For growing one plant under CFLs in my closet, I was originally thinking I could do it for under $100?? Are fertilizers absolutely necessary if im not looking for huge yeilds the first go around? Im just looking for enough to keep me happy for a little while, until I can atleast get another one into flowering.

My set up I am about to make is basically 8 CFL's (2 each in 4 of those aluminum utility light clamps) with an oscillating fan in my closet, which is 36" x 40". I am planning on buying the smallest thing of some decent soil (I was originaly thinking MG but I keep reading on here that is bad? so I was thinkin Scotts or something else??) I would also have to buy a decent extension cord, and a big pot to grow in. I think I can manage without a timer for the lights for this first grow.

I am kinda worried about the pH kit....is this an absolute necessity? I was thinking I can manage without it, and let tap water sit out for a day or 2 before I use it.

During the veg stage, I was going to make one of the buckets with water and febreze in it for smell. Anything else that I have to have to grow a single plant?
My recommendation would be to start two plants. Worst case scenario, youll get one female (hopefully). With 50/50 odds for a female and only 1 plant, it sure would suck to get a dude.

I would for SURE get a timer when you flower, you can buy them at CVS for $8.00. The plant needs pretty steady 12 hours of light, screwing around with it will get you a hermie.

For the pH... if youre on ground water, youll probably be alright without worrying about it too much. If youre on city water, your water will have chlorine in it, which is bad for plants, especially newly sprouted ones. Youll at a minimum want to let the water sit out for 24hours before watering so the chlorine can evaporate.

If you want to use no nutes at all, then I would (contrary to most people) recommend a MG soil. The MG soil shouldnt be too harsh for a sprout, and will continue to feed the plant for its entire life. That is the reason why people dont like MG- because it already has nutes in it, and makes it more difficult to add your own nutes. If you arent planning on using nutes, MG would be a good choice, IMO.

You will also want to buy a decent thermometer/humidity guage. Essential information to have.

Wildfire, I wasn't trying to insult your intelligence, just clarify your point. I just didn't want him getting a less stinky strain thinking it wouldn't stink at all. You brought up a valid point about a strain with less odor and I like your grow.
ya sorry about that man but yea i should have clarified it better im just naturally vauge

SS thanks alot man... +rep

I thought a time was alot more than that so I will go ahead and buy one...and I will use MG since I wont use nutes.

I cant start my grow til after Christmas break because Im goin home from school til the beginning of Jan., but after that Im stating immediately. I cant wait to get back from Christmas break, and it is taking FOREVER haha. Look out for my grow journal around the beginning of January, because I will definitely need some help along the way, as I will probably make alot of rookie mistakes

Ill definetly be on the lookout.

Another peice of advice... get your grow area set up, and start germinating the day you get it set up. This will give you a day or two to get your temps and humidity dialed in. Keep those lights close, and dont water too much!

bumpkin and rolltide are yall gonna do grow journals when you start?
I am definitely planning on it, but it will be about the 2nd week of january before I can start. I have been reading up on growing, all on this site, for about a week and a half. I have been coming every day, just to see everybody's plants to hold me over until then. I really cant wait to start and see if i can tackle the challenge. Hopefully by January, I will have enough knowledge, and enough help to have a successful grow.

btw Wildfire, I was looking at your plants the other day, and they look awesome. Hopefully one day when I have a good bit of money to spend on a bad ass grow room, then I can grow some dank bud like that.

You can get started with soil for around $100 if all you want is a little personal grow, and it's way safer to keep things small if you're not legal. (medical)

Two 150w hps's for flowering, $54 including shipping. http://www.e-conolight.com/Product/EProductDetail.asp?ProductFamilyID=7&FGNumber=E-MT6H151G (open link twice to get the right page)
A couple 4' shoplights or cfl's for veg if you want a seperate veg area $20-30 lowes/home depot
Soil and pots: $10 lowes/home depot
Timer $5 lowes/home depot
$2 mylar camping blankets (target, wallmart)

Depends on your soil as to if you need to buy much nutrients at all, but either way they don't have to be expensive.

Find some free old cabinet(s) to throw these in if you don't already have a closet in mind and use whatever fan(s) you may already have or can find free. Old computer fans work if you add wall warts to power them.

A lot of times people can scrounge up a lot of what they need to get started for free... Even lights if you browse craigslist or freecycle.org.

Are you looking for something larger? 1000w grows can be put together for $200 or so, but even this little setup is enough to keep you supplied indefinately and a couple mooching friends if you use the setup effectively. An example of what a little grow can do is right here:
