You have inspired be brother, I think I am gonna turn my 5g pot into a sip. Can you put your fert feed water in the resavoir too or sure that be top fed?
You can certainly put your brew in the sip. Just be careful if you added dry amendments to the soil. Torch city. Check out the sip thread for more inspiration. An easy 5gal sip is a 5gal pail with a lid. If you put the lid on the bucket and stomp on it, the center of the lid breaks away leaving only the rim. Drill a crap ton of 3/8 or 1/2 inch holes in the lid. Slide it into the bucket until it stops, usually about 5" from the bottom. Cut plastic soda bottles top and bottom right off leaving 5" total, or whatever your lid went to. Stuff all the soda bottles vertically in the bottom. Drill your overflow (at least 1" below the soda bottles, and drill out your feed pipe. Fill with mix, plop a plant, topdress, cover with plastic with a hole cut in the center for the plant, snap the lid rim back on over the plastic. $6 sip + soda.

I already have a Design Idea In my head, Couple things I want to try using some stuff I already have around the house.

Awesome, that's how we roll round this shack. Feel free to post your creation here
Ok so Ill post the Idea here as well.

Design Idea.jpg

Ok First, YES I know I suck at using MS paint guys so go ahead bust my balls, I Have thick skin lmao.

Ok now on to my Ideas, I plan On using a 4 wick System, Sitting under a 5g Cloth bag sitting in a 5g bucket. For the wick im likely going to use Jute Burlap or an old cotton Tshirt not sure yet. I am Including an Air Stone Bar to Provide constant air into the water, I am doing this for a couple reason on, it Increases the oxygen in the water that can in turn be used by the plant and second, water with an air stone does not go stagnant. My Soilless blend will be 50% Peat, 50% Vermiculite,Dolomitic Lime 40g per cubic foot, Gypsum 10 grams per cubic foot. My Fert will be 20-10-20 Jacks Citrus Fertilizer through Out the entire grow at a rate of 2.25 grams per gallon. Which Is Basically the Dr. Bruce Bugbee method used in his Medical Hemp Research Lab. If its good enough for a PhD Scientist, its good enough for me lol. I was going to go with GH until I found Dr Bugbee's research. If Im being 100% Honest, I really cant afford a Multi part Nute system.I am Aiming for about 1g of water in the tank.

I will be amending with 4 Species Endo-Mycorrhizae (Glomus intraradices, G. mosseae, G. aggregatum, G. etunicatum), Molasses, and Epsom Salt as needed.

My concerns How well the water will Wick from the cloth wicks through the cloth bag into the soil @cannabiscrusader Suggested cutting a small hole in the bag and feeding the wicks into the bags, which would work for sure, but The whole point of the cloth bag inside the bucket is to make clean up between grows easier to do, and if I cut the bags im gonna have soil leakage.

Even tho the Science behind Dr Bugbee's media is there, my concern is in a SIP set up will it hold too much water and drown my plants. So that would be my second Concern.

Cant really think of any more concerns off the top of my head, but if I come up with any ill post them.

For the net

I get the conduit straps that have a carriage bolt through them to hold the pipe. I use the hardware that comes with the strap. The carriage bolt has a square shoulder on it. Grab a chunk of 2x4 and drill a 3/8 hole in it. Put the carriage bolt through the strap mounting hole so the bolt comes out the bottom of the strap. Feed the bolt into the 3/8 hole in the 2x4 with the strap. Pound that square shoulder through with a hammer and screwdriver until the head of the bolt is seated flush to the bottom if the strap.

3/4 pvc you will need the following pieces.

2. 18 1/2
2. 16
2. 20 1/2
2. 8
2. 12
2. 6 1/2

18 1/2 and 16 get a t in the middle, and 90s on both ends.

20 1/2 goes in-between those 90s

6 1/2 gets a t on one end and plugs into the t on the net you just made. The 12 and the 8 are the base legs.

The reason for the different sizes is the layout of the quares. I use 3" squares, and the holes would have lined up on the T. Unacceptable. I shifted everything accordingly.

Drill your 1/4" holes for your Mason line and weave away.

A small hole. Like a needle makes pulling a thread. Just enough to get your wick through

Oh Shit, I need to be more clear, The holes for the wicks are going to be about 1 inch around, and the wick is going to be rolled up jute burlap that will fit just snug in the hole without being tight, so just under an inch around, im not using actual wick material.

@IndooorGardnerOhio asked me to explain my sip build. If I already did, I apologize.

Material list

Weed
2 200mg edibles
1 17gal tote with lid
10' perforated drainage pipe
1 Package of drain pipe sock
15" 1/2" pvc
16" 1 1/4 pvc
1 1/2" rubber bushing
1 1/2" pvc 90°
1 bag heavy duty 14' zip ties
Lube, oh yeah

Top net material

10' 3/4 pvc
4 3/4 pvc 90's
4 3/4 pvc t's
4 3/4 emt mineralack straps
1 roll masons line

Tools

Bong
Bic
Beverage
Sharpie
Tape measure
Scissors
Razor blade
Drill
1/2" holesaw and arbor
1 1/4 holesaw and arbor
2 1/4" holesaw
Hacksaw

I start with a 17gal tote from lowes. They are usually on sale for $10. They fit perfectly in a 2x4 area, as you have seen already. 10g of soil I found to be able to hold plenty of amendments to get a strain to at least 4 weeks of veg and 14 weeks of flower. I veg 3 and flower 10 on most strains. Some take 12.

View attachment 5347723

If you haven't consumed your edibles, do so now.

Measure the inside of the tote, and cut 3 lengths of drain pipe. 23" works perfect for this tote. You want it snug so the soil doesn't fall into the res. Some will, I'm sure mine are full of dirt on the bottom. They get dumped on the garden in the spring and hosed out. Any soil in the res just helps as a wick anyways.

View attachment 5347726

Next, take your 3 lengths of perforated drain pipe, your bag of drain pipe sock, and a pair of Scissors. Find a comfy spot and set them down. Go find your bong Bic and weed, 3 rips. Locate your beverage and vape, rally back at your set up comfy spot.

Some would say to wrap the entire pipe in the sock. I say nay, just the tip. I want the roots to find the water. Once they do, you get hydro type growth with none of the effort. It's almost cheating. Shhhhhh don't tell

First, cut 4 lengths of the sock at 14" and 2 at 20". The 20" pieces go on the perforated drain pipe in the middle. Tie a knot at one end of the sock. I use a square knot. Right over left, left over right. Boom square knot. Sleeve the sock over the pipe until the knot is flush with the end. Put a tie wrap around it about 6" back from the end. Twist the end of the tie wrap, cutting it leaves sharp edges that will rip the sock fabric. Or your arm for that matter. Just twist them off, always. Thank you.

Now double the sock over itself and tie another square knot. Put another zip tie at the end of the pipe. For the middle one, don't tie the last knot. Instead just double it back and leave the extra hanging. These will be you wicks. They will never wash out. Wick brother's for life.

That was a bunch of fabrication you just did there, nice job! By now, I'm willing to bet those bong rips have faded and the edibles are kicking in. Excellent, let's keep going.

Let's take the Sharpie and mark the top and center of the middle drain pipe. Just eye it up, it will be fine.

Measure down 1" from that mark. That is the center of your overflow hole. Using the drill ON LOW SPEED AND REVERSE (forward will shatter your tote into the tote formerly known as almost a sip) and 1/2" hole saw, carefully drill your hole from the inside out. Use a razor blade flat against the tote to shave the hole flat.

Locate your 14" piece of 1/2" pvc and drill 1/4" holes through it leaving 4" of it hole free. This will help prevent the overflow from clogging. A clogged sip is a soupy sip. Soupy sips drown your babies. Remember that kids

View attachment 5347732

That was a lot of drilling champ! I bet your hands could use a break. 2 bong rips and refill the beverage.

Now the pain in the ass part. Now is the time for another bong rip if you need one. Sometimes I line the doorway with newspaper and play intro music. Wait for the jam to kick in and shred through the doorway, smacking myself in the chest like the gorilla who is returning champion at thr rubber rink roller derby. You'll see why in a minute.

Grab the lube, bushing, and perfectly punched pvc pipe. Fit the bushing into the overflow hole, and lube the piss out of it. Wiggle it around like lights out on prom night until you get the tip started. Obviously from the inside out so you only have to push the 4" with no holes through. Yeah we saw you, Dan. Idiot

You might say to yourself, "geeze, this would go in a lot easier if the hole was a little bigger, willikers." Don't do it. Your sip will piss all over the floor of your tent. " well golly, how do I get it to go in?". Mail it to daddy. I'll put it in and mail it back. Don't even worry about that.

View attachment 5347739

Now flop the foreskin on the long socked tube and cut a little slit for the overflow to go into. Sleeve it on, put the other 2 socked pipes in the sip and push them snug into the bottom. Grab your lid and drill a 2 1/4" hole in the center. Bigger if you want. This is where your plant goes, duh Dan. Stupid question. Did you just flip me off? Get out, Dan gtfo. Now

OK, where were we. Right. Drill 1 1/4" hole in a corner of the lid on the same side as the overflow. Line that hole up as best you can with the perforated drain pipe below, and drill an 1 1/4 hole in the top of the drain pipe as well. 3 Bong rips, refill beverage, take a leak.

Aquire your piece of 1 1/4 pvc and cut a 45° angle on one end. This end goes into the sip. The 45 cut on the pipe helps to fill the sip easier because the pipe is not sitting flat on the bottom like your palm on a jar of farts.

Fill with your favorite soil mix or cereal, line the lid up and put it on.

Congrats, you just completed your first sip! What an adventure we had. Well, the sound of jingling keys means that whoever owns this house is home now. Join us tomorrow when we build the net. After these people go to work
Wrong picture of the tote. That was the one I made for my brother for his 2x2. The one I use in that post is this one.

Np, happy to help. Post up the finished product when they are ready, I'd love to see them
I’ve gotten two sips built using 17gal totes from Home Depot. They each hold a little over 3gal of water before seeping out of the overflow. I decided to put them in a 3x3 instead of the 2x4, as well. Just seemed to fit a little better in the 3x3.

I decided to wrap the perforated pipe in landscaping fabric because I had some leftover from another project and was curious if it would work. My thought is that it would help keep muck out of the reservoir and it could function like a big cell. For science. lol

In the sips I planted a couple snips I pulled from an aero-cloner. Excited to see what they look like when the lights turn on, hopefully they’ve perked up a little—they were looking a little sad after they got their beards in the cloner. For soil I used some FFOF amended with a cup of Dr Earth 4-4-4 and a generous layer of compost made from pine shavings, chicken manure, and horse manure that I’ve been cooking for past ~6-8 months. :D

Again, thanks for posting all of this. I’ve been meaning to try out sips and this was the motivation I needed to get started.

Sweet, nice job! I picked this size tote because it fits perfect in my veg cabinet. After the plants fill the sip, they spread out past the footprint of the tote anyways. The size is perfect to carry them all the way through to harvest, so I figured a bigger sip is just a waste.

Maybe toss some lime in there. Pine shavings are very acidic when they break down.

Can't wait to see them take off! What's the strain on those snips?

It’s all due to your wonderful writeup. I’m extremely pleased with how everything turned out—I see more of these totes in my future. lol I still need to pickup a couple elbows to keep overflow from running back along the bottom of the overflow pvc and down the side of the tote.

Good point about the pine shavings, I didn’t even think of that. I have some dolomite lime that I’ll add to the mix. I’m still fairly new to growing with organic amendments and haven’t quite gotten over the learning curve—more familiar with salts.

The snips are Sour Diesel IBL (Katsu) and the other is from a Sour Diesel IBL x (Deathstar x Apollo 13) chuck. Both of these phenos grow fairly tall, so I’ll do a short veg and get the net in there to spread everything out once they get a little bigger so I don’t have issues with crowding in flower.

Topped and Cloned all the testers in the veg cabinet, except for the mocha berry replacement, that one will be a week behind. They will recover for a week, then into the 4x8 with the stardawg and godfather bomb mom.

Starting to see some pm in this tent. Sprayed with citric acid and h2o2. I also had a clogged carbon filter that was causing humidity spikes. Disconnected that. Veg cabinet was getting too dry, so I made a damper for the exhaust. I don't even have to run the humidifier most days now.

The new veg cabinet is coming along. I might just use it to pheno hunt until I get 4x8 #3 hooked up with lights and such. I have 2 xs1500ds for the veg cabinet already delivered. It's about 2x8. I'm thinking it should be enough light to flower some short plants. Think i'm going to need one more xs1500. I got some bodhi beans burning a hole in my pocket!

Had to toss the godfather bomb. Smelled OK in the jar, but as soon as I made butter with it all I could smell was acephate. Lesson learned, no acephate in flower unless you are planning on trashing the plant anyways. It was a noble sacrifice, and necessary. Fuck mites

So, humidity outside has been between %70 and %100 for the past 2 weeks. I've been working on my ventilation system keeping the third tent in mind. I made a plenum box out of one of the ceiling joist cavities. All the vents from each tent go to the box. Inside the box is a 6" ac infinity cloudline fan. I already know this fan isn't big enough, and I will have to modify the box to accommodate a bigger one. But building it and running all the duct will light a fire under my ass to get the bigger fan.
1000001991.jpg
For the winter, it dumps into a lung room where I have my dehumidifier set up. I'll have to change that duct and diffuser when I get the bigger fan. I will still use a 6" exhaust with a temp/humidity controller in each tent. Sensors and a separate controller will go in the plenum box itself to control the speed of the bigger fan.

I've been spraying for pm the last 2 weeks, and I keep noticing it's only on the godfather bomb. Now I had just put 2 more in sips so I can keep at least one rotation going while I pheno hunt the chernobyl. Then I though to myself, as Emeril Lagasse would say, Self.... why are we bothering with this bitch of a plant that tastes like mediocre garbage?

Good question self. Especially when we have other beans we just bought from highly reputable breeders.

Why, Self! That's a God damn good point you have there. I can barely feel myself pulling these plants out of these sips and trashing them into the garden that is currently the landscape of hoth from star wars.

Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't hear you while I was going to the bottom drawer of the fridge to get a snac... oh what's this black satchel?

Oh!? I dunno. We should open it

13, instead of 11, noice. Goodbye godfather bomb. Last plants will finish in 3 weeks, then cookies gelato 2 weeks later. 5 weeks should be just right to top and get a clone off these jedis.

Clones and jedis don't mix, lest we never forget order 66.

These all went in a day early. We ran out of room in the cabinet. I do not like the fabric pots., they spike the humidity. I'll have to score some more plastic on the cheap, or sacrifice some 5 gal buckets. Then I'll need 13 more for the jedis. The hunt begins, but first we smoke and play guitar. I've been jamming to jack johnson "if I had eyes" very relaxing. The more you don't care, the better it sounds.

Pics of bloom tent #1 tomorrow, lights out.
