How can I learn to ride a motorcycle on asphalt? I'm thinking of going with the DRZ 400 S for reliability, fuel efficiency and capability. (Though, the Xr150l by Honda, might be just as reliable, fuel efficient and capable, but is it also durable like the drz 400?)
Fuel efficiency and overall cost of the vehicle definitely come to mind, as well as capability --
Something to give me hope.
Is it true I can apply for a learners permit from the DMV in the state of California and practice without a license???

Camping outside'

- What do ya'll know about makeshift shelters, or sleeping on the ground in a sleeping bag, -- is there adequate protection from snakes? I've seen bivvys, and they seem to protect the head whereas a sleeping bag may not, is there a solution ? -- Beyond sleeping with a helmet on in a sleeping bag?

Is there a stretch of free campgrounds along the west coast of california?

What do people do about bear?
Are there any other environmental hazards, i'd have to be worried about?

I'm worried about shelter and future job opportunity

I'll have to scooter about 7 miles to give plasma at $100 USD a pop for I'm guessing 53 minutes...
Then pay uber to take me back
I can do this supposedly twice a week

protection against snakes if your sleeping outside in a bag or under a pendleton blanket, take a thick rope to surround yourself with, snakes think its other snakes and avoid you.
as for learning on asphalt, just go for it, take it slow untill you get your ballance,then go for it slowly but surely, best not to learn on a new bike, as accidents happen.
do you klnow you will need to break the bike in? you cant just speed off on the thing

Depends where you are camping outside, but generally fine. Bugs are the issue in the NE US atm. Bears are also ok, but do not keep food anywhere near where you are sleeping. Camping requires a bear canister for food in the NE.

I'd worry more about cars than critters. Keep your head on a swivel, always leave yourself an out, expect someone will try to kill you, because they will. Busses ALWAYS have the right of way. Just because a person looks at you when driving towards them doesn't mean they see you, they are looking for cars. Had someone in Sac yesterday die from a car turning left in front of them.
A very applicable quote: "There are old motorcyclists and bold motorcyclists but there are no old, bold motorcyclists."
