I was looking around the archives here and noticed something missing.

In upstate NY in the late 90s and early 2000s we called all the good weed 'Kind buds'. I guess this isn't fashionable anymore, but you'd think it would be somewhere. Am I alone on this?

eh, I grew up all around orange/rockland/westchester.. we did not really use the term kind, on occasion someone who read high times (lol) would try to spread the new lingo but I never felt this really stuck, at least around me

KB is definitely an old term, i haven't heard anyone speak of good by that name since 2002

I think it evolved from all the strains coming in covertly from Amsterdam in seed form from the likes of Emery, etc. White Widow, Church, Blueberry, SSH, NL, Trainwreck, etc - I knew the names of some of them but at some point people just called it 'Kind bud' and it was the high grade hydro stuff that was better than beasters and mids, and of course, shwag, brick.

Headies was the popular term around me.. headies or beast (beasters)

Headies was used for anything good as more of a description to let you kno it was worth it, then when you were copping you’d get the strain, white widow, white rhino, ak47, diesel, an assortment of hazes, jack, blueberry, fruity juice, etc

CNY checking in from the early 2000's, definitely remember getting sold "headies" of Sour D, Northern Lights and Fruity Juice. Actually had access to pretty damn good weed from the start. Was always told it was from NYC.

I the early 80’s in upstate New York we used to call it SOD. There was a road sign that someone spray painted SOD in big letters. I believe the sign is still there.
A few years ago I met a guy at work that said he made a trip up there. In the bar that night a guy asked him if he wanted to buy some SOD. He didn’t buy any because he brought his own, but he thought it was a funny name though.

I spent my teenage years in Europe during the 90's. Any time we got flower (we mostly got hash) or made the trip to Amsterdam, it was always a named strain. White Widow, Northern Lights, Super Skunk, etc. Didn't really know much about growing or breeding back then, but we did follow all the hype strains of the day.

When I came back to the US everyone looked at me funny when I'd ask what the lineage was whenever we scored something exceptional. Plus I was introduced to brick shwag headache weed for the first time.

we should use counties to better explain location in ny lol.. If you're from the city anything north is upstate but if you're from the hudson valley upstate is albany and north country and if youre from nyc or hudson valley anything west of the ny thruway doesn't exist lol

I definitely consider Essex county as upstate NY. I am a little north of the city and this is not upstate lol. I think of anything north of Albany as upstate. I also look at big game hunting and the northern zone and southern zone line.

I'm from the same place.. and that's usually a term dead heads and hippies use from my past experiences.

we should use counties to better explain location in ny lol.. If you're from the city anything north is upstate but if you're from the hudson valley upstate is albany and north country and if you're from nyc or hudson valley anything west of the ny thruway doesn't exist lol

Yup. I'm from the hudson valley, Rhinebeck, raised. Originally from the city but spent most of my life 'upstate' which is certainly the hudson valley until you go north to the capital district, where I live now, and they call lake george and anything further upstate. And yes! Anything west is in conversation is automatically associated with Buffalo and Rochester and extracts a roll of the eyes and disinterest.

My old friend was the first to use it as I recall. He was a wannabe hippy, not a dead fan, wore the beard and long hair and pimples since high school, biggest stoner I knew. He got lots of bud from his dad who must have been getting it in the city, blueberry, church, widow, he had labels for most of it but it just became 'kind bud' at some point and everyone was saying it. We fell out of touch. He was a culinary chef and now sells wine and lost the entire façade but I bet he still gets some good weed. I do wonder if he still calls it that.
