Anybody ever gone gold digging/dredging/panning?

I’ve panned gold a few times. Usually finding a flake or two or none. But almost always finding arrowheads or civil war buttons or something interesting. I like taking kids to the river for a little adventure , which produces a lot of fish hooks and broken glass.
i never went with him but a guy i used to work with would go diving in the rivers near charleston sc. he find prehistoric shark teeth which were really cool. and lots of civil war stuff. he said you could barely see your hand in front of your face

"The findings have been nicknamed the “Great Kentucky Hoard” and include a group of 1863 Double Eagles and hundreds of US gold dollars dated from 1850 to 1862, as well as a few silver coins, per Numismatic Guaranty Company, which certified the pieces"

It is illegal in NY as NY claimed all mineral rights to any found on NYS land. And being a surveyor, I know rivers with black sand deposits and huge quartz veins in our area. I have a 35 lb chunk of quartz at my house I “liberated” from a job. This is from a visible vein 30’ wide and runs 90’ up a hill. That’s the visible part…
