Do cold temps help turn purple strains purple?

lots of strains will purple up after going below 60 . .. but a real purple strain.. u want the Purple Pheno.. and u can get purple at any temps.. but temps can turn normaly green bud purple.. but dont introduce the cold until last week of flush.

I'm growing in a cold basement with a purple strain. I notice the last few weeks of flower they start to purple up with my day temps at 75 and night 58. Summer months temps run 82 and 65 at night. Minimal purpling if any at all. Have done some research and found some say yes, some say no. Just wondering what everyone's opinion is on this?

I was born 3rd generation grower illegally for years. Thank goodness its legal now to grow.
They all are right in a way. I have grown many in my 50years. Fact .Not all plants will turn purple. Some stalks and parts of greenier strains such as Indica will stay green regardless of N nutrients or temp. And some Afghani will be purple regardless how its habitat, etc. Its funny to hear my son tell me any strain can be turned to purple while growing.
Anyone remember when one or two puffs and you failed a drug test yet now it takes a bag?? Yes the levels went up by comparison. Who has a plant 40 years old ? Even the 80s ?I got way better weed then from growing than I can get from any local growers now.
And I smoked on and off over the years.
The best I ever had was the worst smelling joint ever. Grown in Kentucky straight stoned comatose 6 hours with 2 hour munchie comedown

Purple is a sign of degradation in Chlorophyll. Yes, strains that were crossed are obviously genetic dependent but when you add those "purp" chemicals or shock it with cold temps it doesn't help the plant be the best it can be.

thats, CAN BE A SIGN, purple strains arer chosen for there colour during growth and bud production.
i think you may be thinking of magnesium deff, that can cause plants to turn purple.
but yes, the cold will help purple strains colour come out more from experiance

plants frequently produce striking purple-coloured flowers under most growing conditions, that doent mean they all do, but the majoraty will or should under most conditions

Yeah, cold plants are slow plants though. I have plants that grow in 80 °F under LED and get black purple. It's pure genetics.

Keeping temps between 70-80 °F 50-55% RH seems like the goldilocks zone day/night.

Chlorophyll degrades in lower temps....Under the chlorophyll is anthocyanin which is a reddish blue pigment. It's revealed as the chlorophyll disappears. In my experience, you can get some of the sugar leaves to turn purple, but it's mostly the larger, outer leaves that are affected the most by the cold temps. And, most of those leaves get trimmed off. Unless the plant is genetically purple, you're only succeeding in slowing plant growth by decreasing the temps.

Incorrect. Edit, I should have said, categorically incorrect since the first part is rightish but not completely right. Purple strains with purple leaf is just a purple strain and will be purple if its a good seed, or cut from a proven mother, and kept cooler, but, non purple strains with purple leafs or other colors and green bud is some sort of deficiency or an abundance in nutrients because just about any pot plant can be made to turn the inner bud to some color other than green once the bloom time is turned way cooler. You get good results for purple weed outside of growing a purple strain going down to 40. Plants don't know they're cold, they just know if they're not frozen they're still growing, otherwise, they're dead. Cold doesn't effect time to grow to maturity, it effects how it's going to grow in the new environment and as long as you don't jump to low to fast, it'll adjust and be right on track as long as you're mindful and don't shock them. Thats when time of growth can be effected, not just simply turning the ac down.
