I saw something disgusting yesterday at a friends outdoor grow in OK. He is a good grower with happy plants making fat flowers. But, some of his plants are turning to the dark side. They look different, and when you inspect them there are no pistils on the darker areas. It starts at the bottom and works its way up the plant. The tops of buds look healthy and then the pistils are gone and the bud looks shitty. Some plants holding out against it better than others.
Does this sound like a virus or something fungal? There are no noticeable signs of insects or anything growing on the plant. Just good flowers that go bad and a day or two later are completely messed up. The flowers stink afterwards too.
Never seen anything like it. It sucks. So close to harvest and he is about to lose most of his plants. A lot of plants. Jeez, Im going to take another shower and spray myself with ISO. I feel grosser than the first time I saw aphids.

Just a guess, but maybe some flowers got pollinated and dropped their pistils. You said it’s all on one side, so that makes me think a cloud of pollen got blown onto the plants. Other than that, no idea.

Yeah, I will get him to send me pics. It is all over the plant, not just one side. This is like someone stripped all of the pistils away. Not pollinated, this is something bad happening to these plants. Thanks.

Not the sharpest pics. You can see a healthier tip on the first shot. Thick white pistils. Then on the affected plants they are gone. Shriveled. Not ripened and retreating.
He think it is botrytis. Could be. No powdered flowers or anything growing on the plant tissue, but shriveling and a bad smell. And it is fast once it starts. Bottom up spreading.
He is good with his plants. They usually always look happy and healthy. This is one of those at natures mercy moments.

That sounds like boytris/bud rot. I cut 2” off below the bud rot (discard that part) and spray with straight hydrogen peroxide or a bio fungicide. It does spread fast and thats why you have to cut it out and disinfect between each cut. I usually have two spray bottles, one with alcohol and one with peroxide and a garbage bag. I cut, discard, spray peroxide, spray alcohol on my hands and clippers and move on to the next spot. Then at then end I throw the bud rot in the garbage can.
It is really bad to smoke moldy bud, so at harvest I do a triple wash of the harvested flower to make sure its cleaned off. The weather in my area has been prime for making mildew and mold everywhere lately.

Does the peroxide have any negative effects when flowering ?
