HPS vs CFL

I grew one crop with a 400w HPS and got to paranoid about having it in a closet in my house because everyone who came in heard my fans runnning, so for my next crop i want to move my setup in the attic but the HPS and ballast make to much heat for me to feel comfortable leaving it on around all the insulation in my attic so i was wondering can i get the same results with CFL bulbs and do they produce much heat, also i have been hearing about the LED grow light panels has anyone heard anything on thier performance?

get a dimmer switch hooked up to your fan and turn it down a touch. works wonders for the noise.

you'll get a lot of misinformation on this, let me try and give you the straight story:

- leds are worthless

- hps is cooler than cfl's AT THE SAME LUMEN level. so if you want the same amount of light you're better off with the hps. cfl's have lower heat per watt of energy used. if you use few enough cfl bulbs to keep the temp down, your harvest will be a lot poorer than what you are used to.

Your buds won't get as big if you use CFLs... but they will work. They put out very little heat. However, if I were you, I'd try to find a way to combat the heat and use the HPS.

Two things really quick...

1. You also have Fluorescent tubes

2. You're in the veg stage. The real test will be when you flower your plants.
Very true! But I just turned on the T5's Sunday evening so almost all the growth has come from the LED's. It seems like they are growing a little faster with the T5's but still, they were exploding even without them. You're right about the test and I'm going to test them to see, once and for all, if they can make the plants produce a lot of bud. I have a 400w HPS (and MH) but for this first crop I'm not going to use it; I'm going to stick with the LED's all the way to the chop. I'll be cloning / vegging / flowering every 3 weeks anyway so it's no big deal if I lose a little bud. The most important thing to me is to find out if all this smack-talk about LED's is valid or just a bunch of BS.

Good. Let me know how the buds turn out.
