I grew one crop with a 400w HPS and got to paranoid about having it in a closet in my house because everyone who came in heard my fans runnning, so for my next crop i want to move my setup in the attic but the HPS and ballast make to much heat for me to feel comfortable leaving it on around all the insulation in my attic so i was wondering can i get the same results with CFL bulbs and do they produce much heat, also i have been hearing about the LED grow light panels has anyone heard anything on thier performance?

I'd get a sheet of dry wall (it's pretty cheap)
put it up where your gonna put your HPS light
if your insulation is the paper/cotton kind thats blown in
I wouldn't use the HPS in the attic.
You might want to think of getting a
air cooled reflector like the cool tube
for you HPS Light and
vent it right out side.
Depending on what you grow, and how many plants you grow
you'll have alright results, not as good as HPS.

Unless you live in a very cold region your gonna have a hell of a time keeping that attic cool in the summer. If it's something you consider a must though you could always partially finish the attic with drywall and get a portable air conditioner going up there. I got a 10,000btu one for around $350. Don't exhaust directly outside without a carbon filter though cuz it'll reek up the whole neighborhood. CFLs produce almost no heat and are getting better every year but still aren't on par with high discharge lights in my opinion. The T5s put out quite a bit of lumens but I still have questions about their penetrating power. The easiest thing for you to do however may be to simply buy some quieter fans. If all you have is an HPS ballast you can buy a HPS to MH conversion bulb for the veg cycle.
thats some really purple light! What are the lumens and spectrum of those LEDs?
