large yield vs frosty buds ?

This is my experience over 48 years of smoking weed . I've found that my nose tells me more than my eyes .

I've had some outdoor plants that had little frost but were sticky , smelled a mile away and put your dick in the dirt .

I do like a nice frosty bud but it's not imperative .
 
Flavor...Strong smelling flowers. That's what I always look for. I don't really care about yield since I only grow 4 plants per run in a single tent with a single light fixture -and I usually end up with an excessive amount, anyway. Since I don't smoke a lot, I really just want to find one of those old school flavor-packed strains that I can take one hit and savor the flavor....don't care about THC levels. I have never had any plants tested, anyway, so how would I know? It either gets me high or it doesn't. But it's the taste I will remember and associate with whether a strain is good or not. Hey, if I end up with a flavor-packed strain that yields well, too, then cool.

P.S. In my limited experience, I dislike auto flower strains. The ones I have tried have a strange quality to them.
 
Do dispensaries state that the buds are autos? Are they even grown commercially? I've never thought about it. I have no idea if I've ever smoked any either. I've always thrown the freebie seeds in the trash just so I didn't accidentally run them.

I've grown hundreds of varieties and tasted even more, it's obvious frosting doesn't equal quality and has been clear since I grew black widow 20 years ago and has been reaffirmed by numerous modern cultvars. It's an inexperienced opinion on par with thinking alcohol percent determines the quality of booze which is clearly absurd when put in those terms.

Depends how you define potency I guess, in the most literal sense THC percent equates to the potency as it's the main psychoactive cannabinoid although subjectively the effects of sedative vs stimulating bud could define potency I suppose since some people find one experience or the other more intense. I tend to think of it as quality of effect (defined subjectively) and potency (defined by cannabinoid content, terps as well if you believe in the entourage effect).
 
A lot of threads in the past have talked about the physical differences in trichomes that result in certain strains looking incredibly frosty, but being of mediocre potency. Platinum comes to mind. Some strains have trichomes with unusually long, thick stalks, which gives the impression of having lots of trichomes, but actually you're just seeing a whole lot of less potent stalks-which give a very "white" appearance. The potency is all in the trichome head. Some strains that are just packed with short stalk/fat head trichomes and are extremely potent, are much less visibly frosty, even though they actually have numerically more trichomes than the long stalk varieties. Frost is a bad indicator of potency and quality, but it's great for pictures.
 
trichomes have different concentration levels on each strain. That’s just obvious.

I know exactly what the op means

Fake Frost = Peach Fuzz
Real Frost = Sparkly and Glittery Sugar

Like in January after a fresh snow when the temp drops below 10 degrees F, on a clear day when the sun is shining and the sky is blue. the snow glistens and sparkles.
 
I much prefer the terp taste I get from my “old man weed” I grow over much of the dispo stuff. I am sure mine is lower in THC (never tested) but who really cares…take another rip! But no matter how many tips you take of dirt tasting weed you will never get it to taste different.

I think you misintrepreted my statement or I was too obtuse.

I took exception to the post comparing two samples: one frosty and weak, the other non-frosty and potent, and came to the conclusion that frosty weed is inferior. That's problematic and logically flawed.

I stated "the frost ain't the issue", which it isn't. Obviously, someone can have some frosty weed that's quite potent or ho-hum.

That's why I didn't say "all frosty weed is weak" but instead qualitfied that most frosty buds don't do it for me. I'm still not sure what you're trying to say as it seems to be the same thing I said: frost doesn't equal quality as there are strong and weak frosty varieties and sampling product is the only way to know if frosty weed is good or shite, pictures don't say anything about quality. So what am I missing, why did you say I need more experience with frosty varieties or did you misunderstand the initial comment and thought I was making a sweeping statement that all frosty buds are inferior?

I really like this comparison and I plan on using it in the future! That's a great point. I'd rather sip and savor a fine, tawny, port wine in front of a crackling fire, than I would to do tequila shots at a loud party. As far as THC goes...first, it was the medical people who jumped on it as a selling point. Then, the recreational market carried on the tradition. It makes the uninitiated think that the higher the THC, the better the high will be. In my experience, that's not the case at all.....And, in fact, most of the highest (or so they say) THC strains that I've tried, seem to lack more flavor than many lower THC strains. Is there a correlation between THC content and terpenes -the higher the THC, the lower the terpenes? I don't know. I'm asking. I have learned to disregard the THC "muscle flexing" as far as marketing goes.

The "test" in the old days was for someone to walk into a room with a baggie of weed in their coat pocket and fill the entire room up with that skunky/rotten blueberry smell within seconds. That's how you knew that someone had good weed on them! That's why pachouli oil was popular. It was the only thing that would cover the skunk smell! Ironically, anyone who smelled like pachouli oil was just as suspect!
As far as "frost" goes, I don't ever remember seeing trichomes on any Acapulco Gold or Red Columbian that I used to get. I don't remember it on Thai weed, either. Go figure.
