i've heard more examples of this, stores raising prices as more "rich" Americans move in, rents go up, locals getting squeezed out of businesses that expats frequent...

seems like we can't get over being colonialists, even in retirement...
my real question is why is retiring in our own country such an unattractive option?

i understand the desire, but having lived half of my life in warmer climates, there are drawbacks...cooling costs are about the same as heating costs in cooler regions, there are a lot more pests to deal with, a lot more maintenance is required to keep your home in decent shape...but the big one is that warm weather draws fucking psychos...not that there aren't plenty of crazy bastards up north as well, but the warmer it is, the denser the population of fucking frootloops...
of course thats just in America, perhaps the warmer countries have climatized insanity better than we have

Our plan is to travel so we will be selling our house when my wife retires. We have pensions, investments and our house is paid for so we will sell the house and rent. Portugal is relatively cheap and the healthcare system is reasonably priced and of good quality but of course that could all change in 15 years (when my wife can retire).

But, serious question. . ...

Why is rent getting raised, just because people of better means are moving to someplace cheap??? Why is that the fault of the people moving to more affordable areas?? Does this not indicate some sort of systemic problem with the unfair hiking of fees and rates???

like, WHAT THE FUCK???

It is a predicted consequence of the concentration of our wealth into the pockets of our oligarchs. They are becoming the nation’s landlords. Their ethic is like that of Haitian slavers:
it is cheaper to work your slaves to death every 6-9 months and replace them —
than it is to give them the survival minimum.

They are bleeding us white as per plan. Not even a conspiracy so much as an uncoordinated convergence of self-interest.

We need Eisenhower-level taxation to stop the trend.

well, of course, everything comes down to cash in one way or another...
Americans move to be able to retire in something like comfort after being fucked over by their employers for decades, which raises the rents where they move to, causes stores to raise their prices, raises the price of vehicles and gas...so they aren't as well off after 5 years as they thought they were going to be, and all the local poor people are even poorer because they're there...

Imo it is no accident; see above your post.

it's called supply and demand, it's the basis of the world economy.
it's a socially malignant idea, but it's the driving force right now, and it's going to take massive effortto replace it with something more socially responsible, since no one is even offering a sane alternative to point at at the moment

I view anyone who says “free market!” andor “small gov’t!” with complete distrust, as purple A is doing now.

Landlords be landlords, idk, they charge what the market will bear, like nearly everything. I can introduce you to my friend socialism if you are interested...

It really is just supply and demand. Sucks for the people that live there, but the people exploiting the situation and charging the higher prices also live there. Should they have to miss an opportunity because another local can't offer it?

*yes, this ignores investment corps buying up houses and the issues there, talking more broadly.

This makes sense.

Supply of housing is often inhibited by regulation, etc. Government, once again, the root cause of a problem, that liberals will cry for government to fix. Like asking a rapist to wear a condom. Silly people.
