For the record, if Sean Hannity is *not* a brain-free scumsack IRL, then he for sure plays one on teevee. My folks told me when I was growing up, “you keep doing that, you’ll end up like that”.View attachment 5181756
Hannity, speaking on Premiere Radio Network’s “The Sean Hannity Show,” pointed out that the Constitution does not bar felons from holding the presidency and sets the limits for the office to only being born in the United States and being at least 35 years old.
“Being a felon is not a disqualification,” Hannity said. “So even crimes potentially far more serious than what is being alleged, potential mishandling of classified information, doesn’t stop somebody from seeking the presidency.”
Hannity, perhaps forgetting that voters would or should be highly influenced if a presidential candidate was indeed a convicted felon, pointed out — correctly, according to Poynter Institute — that federal law does prohibit a felon from “holding office in the United States.”
“And if they’re — if they think that they’re going to somehow make this about Donald Trump and prevent him from running from office, well they obviously have not read something called the Constitution,” Hannity said. “Because the Constitution is pretty clear on what qualifies one to be able to run for president.
“In other words, OK, even if Section 2071 in the federal penal code has penalty provisions upon the conviction that a defendant shall forfeit his office and be disqualified from holding any office under the United States,” Hannity continued. “OK, but we do have something called the Constitution. And the qualifications for one to be president of the United States that is very clear and enumerated. And you can’t alter it by any statute precisely because our framers in their wisdom didn’t want the executive branch dominated by the legislature, as would happen if Congress could disqualify any incumbent or potential president simply by passing a law.”
I’m kinda the LAST person to say, ”listen to your parents”, but he should have - ‘cause NOW look at him….
More to the point, Hannity cunningly says nothing about how the constitution is silent on DISqualifications…or about how MUCH the founders had to say about elements of character that’s *would* be certain disqualifications. Had Jefferson, Madison, & Hamilton been able to foresee digital media, *photography & photocopying*, thumb drives, and an internal political move to undo the founders’ work entirely, I’m completely convinced they would have taken a deeper look at the variety of creeping tyrannical bullshit that would bar someone from office.
TL;DR = read the federalist papers about the electoral college: their main justification is/was that the EC would be able to KEEP A MAN LIKE TRUMP FROM SEIZING OFFICE - BECAUSE OF THE FAULTS IN HIS CHARACTER. It was also one of Jefferson’s chief concerns - that an ignorant, uneducated (or ”miseducated” - ie, brainwashed, low-information rabble) could completely undo our experiment in self-government by simply lacking the ability to assess a candidate’s fitness for office, thereby proving the founders WRONG in placing their bets on the better angels of our nature (yes, a Lincoln quote).
