He lied under oath, not often prosecuted in civil cases, but this one has the whole ball of wax including intent etc, plus he pissed off the judge. A new trial is required for a new crime, but it will be a criminal one this time.

For myself, I would put other considerations first, but money doesn't hurt and makes up for the thousands of death threats they got from people like you because of him. Jones made up lies and defamed people which they say led to a living hell for them when right wingnuts descended upon them with threats and harassment. Part of this shows the evil underbelly of the gun rights movement but that's a different matter. I put that out to say Jones was pandering to a political audience to grow viewership and generate ad revenues. Jones made bank from the shit storm he ginned up and launched at the parents. The plaintiffs are asking the jury to take his illegal gains away from him and give it to his victims. This assumes the jury agrees with the prosecution regarding damages.

It doesn't matter what you think are the parent's motives. You seem to be claiming its greed. It could be or it could be the need to see justice for the harm he did. Either way, Jones made up shit that he's already been found guilty of defamation of character. Justice is served if his ill gains are taken away from him and given to the parents and their lawyers.

One does not follow the other. Just because the plaintiff asks for a large sum in the settlement does not mean they aren't motivated by seeing justice served for the harm done to them.

Are you suggesting they would exchange the life of their child for that money? In any case, nothing will bring back the child or reverse the unwarranted harm Jones perpetrated upon them. The only question that remains is what remedy would constitute justice?
