I actually drove a Pinto back in the day. I had a friend that put a V8 in one. Not many people did it. Most were doing the V8 Vega.

Good ole gas guzzling V8. Not the same car just a photo I grabbed of the internet.

When I got out of the navy it was cheaper to buy a used pinto that buy a plane ticket from Norfolk to Panama City. Thus I got the pinto bean. It was a good car for the money. I drove it two or three years.

Ex roommate had it for cheap. Like a lost dog, she found me.

The old girl came with a funny backstory. I was renting a room from Mark and his wife when he bought the pinto bean. She needed some work, and we were friends with a machinist mate named Coop who would work on cars for a 12 pack and some decent smoke. Coop was hip and he wore an earring. Fast forward a month or so and one day Mark and I get in from the ship and his wife has found an earring in the pinto bean and has lost her ever loving mind. She had already booked a seat flying to Dallas the next day. (they were Texans) After a few hours he was able to make her grasp the fact that the earring belonged to Coop and she cancelled her reservations. Worst mistake he ever made.

I had moved on from there and was living in other quarters, but Mark was a little short on the ready, and I needed a ride, so we worked something out. I think I paid 600 bucks for it. And as far as I know, it's still at the pond house.

Can you suggest a car to purchase for me?
i don’t want brand new and I can’t have a plug in because I have no where to plug it in but I need to get a car. I want it small with good gas mileage. I was thinking Hyundai elantra but then I saw one on the hwy and the front grill doesn’t allow for a Licence plate and it looked ridiculous with an arm sticking out to the side with the plate . I want to stay around $20,000 or under.

I usually check out the video reviews to get an overview for major purchases. An electric bicycle is an option for sunny CA too, one with a removable battery pack is nice. If you need an ICE car I've found the Korean ones to be reliable, have a look at some youtube reviews for what to avoid and look for in the cars you are considering.

In a few years EVs will be an increasing option and apartments might be required to have charging with parking. In Canada we use block heaters in winter and plug cars in out west and most apartments with outside parking have them. Charging with parking could already be implemented in CA or soon might be.

Depending on what you will be using a car for an EV still could be an option. If say you drive 10 or 20 miles to work on average and your EV has a range of 200 miles (common these days for cheap EVs), you would only need to charge up from a fast charger once a week and have plenty of capacity to spare. Your price point might not be there yet, but things are changing fast in this business and every year options are expanding along with charging points. The point is, just because you can't charge at home, doesn't necessarily mean you can't own an EV, it depends on what you are using it for and how much you drive it everyday.

Here is a review of new EVs, some of the Chinese ones might not be available or legal here, but they are looking to break into the automotive market. Living in California makes an EV more viable too, no cold weather worries.

I have a 9-year-old Honda Fit that I like a lot.
It routinely hands me mileage in the 50 range. Manual transmission, 101 kmi, runs new. (Disclaimer: I drive slowly. Most folks get sub-40 mpg in mixed cycle. Rare is the semi truck that is slower than me in my Fit on the freeway.)

Theyve discontinued the model. Dealer said corporation is focusing on SUVs. Shame; I’ve always looked to Honda for high mpg. But you might find third-gen (mine is gen 2) units for sale with lo mi.

I hope it lasts until Apteras are available. Then it’ll be my last gasser.

My daughter, son in law, and ex all drive Elantra's and love them. They also have a spot for plates on the front (Ontario) so not sure why the one you saw didn’t ! Maybe it’s a US model thing?

Might just be Cali. My bumper is drilled for the plate. I have only the rear mounted. The front would kill my aero.

Late-model Elantras with the non-turbo 2.0 inline-four are good, but the turbo only goes three miles for every four miles the naturally-aspirated motor delivers from the same amount of fuel.

There’s an Elantra in the 50s but it is hybrid. Iirc that was a no.

I’m not sure what year my daughters is, possibly 2011-12 but she did have an engine replaced after the 3rd year under warranty due to metal shavings in it but other than that it’s been ok.

I love my golf tdi.
Prices are still pretty cheap on them and it will get you a long ways on a tank.
I get around 40 average highway/city, and better just highway. Around 600 miles on 13 gallons if i behave.

i was gonna say jetta tdi. i put a tune on mine (2015) from kerma: 50+hp, 100+torque and i can get around 60 on the highway now

Weighing out everything …style and lifestyle I have decided what will work best. It’s going to be brand new and cheap . It has to be a small sedan and either red or blue. Nothing fancy nothing special . It’s going to be a brand new beater car. And when it gets scratched and hit I really won’t give a fuck. I don’t have the time patience or energy to be worried about a car. It’s only a mandatory necessity to get me around. I am pretty sure the Hyundai Accent checks all the boxes .

Had one for years, solid car with good gas mileage, was a top car in the reviews at the time. If there are last years models left you could get a deal so shop around. Good luck and they also have wonderful sound systems with great sounding speakers, best place to listen to tunes.
