I got these Oleander Aphids too, damn it.
SLF has been confirmed in your state last year so it will spread quick. Today I found an early nymph (black and white) on the cannabis stem, whereas the mature stage 4 SLF (red and white) was on the pepper plant, the other stage 4 killed a few days ago was also on the pepper. It's 100% anecdotal with a total of 2 encounters, but maybe when the slf matures and is in its final form, it might prefer munching on plants other than cannabis

I got a bunch of the black and red bugs as well. They were swarming on my Asian greens, kind of looked like stink bugs on steroids, fat chunky guys.

Are they the source of the gypsy caterpillar? Everyone walking the AT thru the New England states are having all their gear (and themselves) covered in gypsy caterpillar shit. At night it sounds like rain on the tents.

You should see the Cape. The campsites have billions, I mean billions. It's insane. Yes I'd say the gypsy moth = gypsy paterkillers. The Gypsy Moth has been renamed, as 'sensitive people' think the word gypsy is racial. Now Allegedly called the Spongy Moth.

Some have had allergic reactions bad enough they had to go to urgent care. Not sure if it was the brown tails or the gypsy's.
Jay, a hiker I follow on You Tube always does a find a bug (or whatever) search and he talked about the name change on his channel.

Thats brown tail that gives the rash, Gypsie's are native here they do a lot of damage to hardwood trees sometimes strip them bare. It the hairs on the brown tail caterpillar that bother people i get it every fall while raking it leaves scars for months on me.

For years I joked I had the two worse handicaps for a thru hiker. A job and a wife. Since the first covid lockdown I have only been working one night a week, but Monday night is my last day at work. So I've taken care of one of those. Joking aside, my wife's mobility issues gets worse every year, so she can't really take care of the farm by herself. I guess I could try to hike a section every summer, but no real chance of a thru hike in the foreseeable future.
I have been crunching numbers, and think if I ever get the chance I will do the southern 1/3, skip ahead to New York/ Connecticut state line, just to make sure my slow ass can get to Baxter before they close for the season. And flip back and finish the mid Atlantic states in the fall. The bubble is crazy this year, and it will just get worse. In March and April over 60 folks a day start at Springer. Full privies and no tent spots is the norm until folks start dropping out.

Here's some updated photos from coastal Maine. Things are going well here so far. Plants are bushing out nicely and growing taller daily. The two in pots are something my brother in-law just brought over last week still in solo cups. He asked what I could do, I just kinda shook my head and said don't expect to much. My new fencing is a little close, but it is what it is for this year.
