Can you ‘re-root’ the main stem?

So I’m aware with cuttings you take a developing branch and clone it.

Today my wife chopped up ‘by mistake’ a killer kush seedling I had growing in the garden.

It was a clean cut and now I’m trying to make it root. Got no rooting hormones or powder but have heard about using honey. I’ve used honey before to rescue the exact same situation but with a stickywilly plant. Time will tell with this.

So can you re root the main stem or only a cutting? How curious

I think it'll root but it could take a while, air layering might be an option for future stems.

I topped a plant for mainlining and stuck the cutting in damp coco coir. I put a clear container over it to hold in humidity and misted the inside every other day. I know its not the same thing as what you have but the top is the main stem. i was beginning to lose hope but at 2 1/2 weeks I finally saw roots!
Definitely worth a try if its "killer". Just be patient.

They are essentially the same thing. Your cutting is a tad small/young so it might take more time than a more mature branch.

You can use a rw cube or root it sponge etc and wrap it around the stem you want to root while it's still on the plant.

The main root ball keeps it going it going until it roots then you can cut it free from the plant and re pot it.

Put a cube/plug around the stem you want to root and wrap it with clingfilm/tape then twist a piece of wire beneath the plug enough to slow the sap flow but not stop it.
(see strangle mark below the plug)

There's another method that involves removing some bark with a Stanley but it's too delicate for me I find wiring it easier.

You can buy these little gadgets to make the process more convenient.

They just clip around the stem with some coco/moss in them.

You can 100% clone or "root" the main stem. Like other dudes mentioned, your cutting is a little small, but it should do fine.

I used to think you could only clone lower branches. After years of cloning branches, all my plants were growing tall and lanky with thin stems and totally spaced out alternating nodes. I found myself believing that clones "lose vigor" over time.

Then, fucking around, I cut and rooted the main stem after topping my plants later than usual. It totally worked out, the main stems grew into shorter, tighter, bushier plants. Now I always cut fewer, bigger clones right from the main stem.

Only thing I can think is that it came from outdoors. Temps are roughly 60’s day and mid 40’s night. Now she is at a constant 77f. Must be liking it lol

If she pulls through I might get the old 2x2 out and finish her off indoors instead of risking her outside

yeah the top clones from a seed will grow so vigorously, 2 months after sprout the seed still opposite-decussate phyllotaxis

When I was a kid I seen my dad burying branches of willow and honeysuckle to root them.

When I started growing being keen af I tried it but it didn't work as well as I remembered, I'd get a some basal after weeks but no roots, in hind sight maybe if I'd been more patient but you know what it's like

I really can't remember how I made the connection to strangling the stem but that was the key to rooting them reliably and quickly

I know you posted a picture but somehow between looking and replying your fresh green stem had become old and woody in my head that's the reason I said it might take a while and also suggested air layering for future.

Being fairly green I expect it'll root in a couple of weeks like normal, I've had the odd clone that are reluctant to root maybe 2-3 weeks but I've never made the connection to them being tops just random as far as I can tell?

My understanding is you need the leave node for roots to pop out. That they won’t just grow off the stem. But my figures are crossed for you I think it will root tho if she’s responding already.

I do like to have nodes no doubt about that but they aren't essential for rooting.

The one on the right for example there's no node but that's not unusual.

That’s an awesome technique. I have checked up on this a while back, and stumbled upon grafting. That is one thing I’m really tempted to give a try. You know me & my experiments lol

I believe it will be ok. It may turn out to be her first FIM lol. Like Jinxproof always says “B+” you got this. It just might take a little longer than a mature plant to bounce back.. expect that stem to fatten up EXTRA early tho.
