I use 196p vodka, it's the closest to straight grain I can find:
I put it in my deep freezer and leave it there, so it's constantly -4f.
-The cannabis, I prefer it to be dry...and decarb however you like. For this I don't break it down. Keeping it intact keeps breaks in the tissue minimal and less chance of getting chlorophyll in your final product.
-Once Decarb'ed I freeze the cannabis too. I also put my jar (or whatever you're going to use to hold the herb+alcohol) in the freezer. Everything should be cold. It locks the chlorophyll in the plant and not in your solution.
-From here it's as simple as pouring the alcohol over the cannabis and sealing it up. Keep it at freezing temps and make sure the alcohol is covering the weed. If you need to use a spoon or spatula to squish it down to keep it covered, that's fine.
-I give it a shake a few times along the way to help strip THC/Trichomes. I've done it for as little as a few hours or up to a few days. They say that all you need is a few hours, but I seem to get more firepower from a bit longer.
Once you're done with your soak, use a fine mesh sieve to remove the plant material. I also pass mine through one of those metal mesh coffee filter baskets.
The final product should be gold in color, not green.
This is a 3-day frozen soak:
From there, evaporate out the alcohol and whatever water was in the mix (some from the booze, plus whatever the plant carried with it).
I do it by just covering the jar with paper coffee filter and let it evaporate down naturally, though a hot plate, etc. speeds things. *all the safety caveats about vaporized explosive alcohol* Towards the end it may look weird, because the water is the last thing to evaporate and the oil separates from it. Once the water is gone too, I add a bit more alcohol to make it pourable then store it for use.
