Basically, yes. Flat bottom creates a thin nutrient film or stream, which allows the roots to absorb oxygen from the air. In NFT systems you want a nice slow flow of around 1 liter per minute, not a rushing river. With deep bottoms, roots can be subjected to anaerobic conditions much easier, resulting in a rotten mess in the root zone.
so my thinking on that pic he/she put up was considered a flooded tube design, not NFT ? so more like SWC but with lots of flow thru the tubes. or i guess you could make either one, nft or ft, just depending on how you kept your water level in it.
You would likely want to add air bubblers in the channels if it was a deeper water system.

yes, it's bent up for some reason, it's normally pointing down to the reservoir bucket and the green hose does the flooding via a small submersible pump.
and the containers are 2 liter soda bottles? do they screw in to the pvc rails?
Yes 2 ltr and if I remember correct the piping is 1" thin wall and a piece of that goes in to the top of the "T" and the caps fit into that small piece.
