so while i dont grow in dwc i guess if i were to design a dwc reservoir i’d make it in a dodecahedron shape so that if you have your tribe over at your place but forgot where your dice is you can still frp with your reservoir! now thats a million dollar idea!Well it certainly got me thinking, when I saw it, and while I don't use soil, I am interested to see if I can replace this View attachment 5136995shallow water culture 20Litre double tub with external reservoir, with this little thing. View attachment 5136994 I'll find out in 8 weeks. So while I don't grow in soil I started to think about how I might do it.
Of course not, 'optimal' is a very broad term, it could apply to substrate, and the material they use in these plug is optimal, but that doesn't mean that the whole set up is optimal. Every good medium has it's pro and cons. But you are right I am obsessed with these pyramids because I've always been obsessed with roots and they do something that no other medium does, which is keep the micro fine furry roots intact.I think you're obsessed with the pyramid idea, and any results you will see through a confirmation bias lens. Just because it works doesn't make it optimal.
Funny shit, but that was like my very first cassette tape when I was like 4-5, . I've been a ladies man since I was born,
I guess if I'm going to have something that's 10" tall that takes up 12" of floor space I don't want to waste the volume by using a pyramid. You seem really devoted to the ez pyramids, almost like you're an investor or a financially interested party the way you push them. While a lot of the roots as far as heavy water roots may be at the bottom of the pot, my pots are quite packed with roots to the point of being rootbound by the end of flower usually. That means the volume of soil in the entire pot is being useful to me as the more roots the plant has the better it tends to yield. Limiting your root mass to a small pyramid might have applications where it's beneficial for some people due to space requirements but it's not beneficial to the plant in my opinion.@FirstCavApache64, why do you say that when you already know that the bulk of the roots are towards the bottom of the bag. Roots don't want to grow against gravity they know which way is down. Agreed there's no set amount of soil because that depends on the plant and the substrate. When you say 'nobody' else can see it, you are just referencing half a dozen people on a single thread. All the best ideas are because nobody saw the obvious. They laughed at Apple laptops when they moved keyboards near the screen instead of near the user. But it was such an obvious move that once it was pointed out, it became standard.
Take the Eazy Pyramids, they are a solid substrate that can be made in any shape, when the shape is not dictated by what is easy, but instead what works best, all their moulds are narrower at the top and wider at the bottom. They could make instead of a pyramid, a cylinder like a grow bag, but they do not do that. And the reason is obvious.
Actually the velcro idea is better, you'd just need it for the neck of the bag. Well you wouldn't need it but it would make it a bit easier, the zipper was just if a bag was made to be easily reusable, but it is a bit of overkill.
Exactly. This is similar to the reason that I prefer square shaped pots vs round. Less wasted floor space.I guess if I'm going to have something that's 10" tall that takes up 12" of floor space I don't want to waste the volume by using a pyramid.
I went to squares for my clones for this exact reason. Rounds were wasting space/real estate.Exactly. This is similar to the reason that I prefer square shaped pots vs round. Less wasted floor space.
Why I'm switching to square pots as well. Not sure it's gonna save the world but it's a square peg in a square hole at least.Exactly. This is similar to the reason that I prefer square shaped pots vs round. Less wasted floor space.

They will take up the shape of the container, but they do care what the shape is, it's just that they don't get a say in it. Why do you think the pyramid is not made cylindrical instead of conical? They don't care what shape the medium is, they will take up whatever space is available.
Because aliens built them. Gravity and shit. When I cut my first mini pyramid open that was the Purple Haze above, I was very curious to see the root structure, I thought I'd see roots going all through it, but instead I was surprised to see that most of the roots were so fine that I could not see them, I could only see a few of the thickest trunk roots then they sort of vanished into the medium.

I have a better idea, instead of doing what you want me to do, why don't I do what I want me to do regarding testing. And that is what I will be doing with the mini pyramids because they allow me to grow very many more plants. Right now I'm at the stage of seeing how beans that I am familiar with take to the mini. But I have been so impressed that I'm now testing one of the big ones in the hope of completely replacing my SWC, as I posted above. Why don't you just do a "Proof of Concept" and do a side by side with the same cloned cuts in the same medium with different shapes and report back?
Your "beans" are not going to grow identical. You can grow a 30 pack of beans of the same strain/breeder, and they will grow differently. Ask me how I know.I have a better idea, instead of doing what you want me to do, why don't I do what I want me to do regarding testing. Later I intend to use the minis to do all the different side by side tests that interest me that I could never to before because I'm not going to run a test in a 20 litre hydro.
Those look great for drainage, I'm just wondering if it would be an open invite for extra fungus gnats in organics. I don't know, it's something I'd like to find out.I'm a big fan of the hydrofarm active aqua pots myself, as a coco dtw grower.
