Why aren't fabric bags cone shaped.

@crimson, its a fair point to say that it doesn't hold its shape well, but that's just one of the things that a manufacturer redesigning their grow bags would have to address. We start with a concept that is sound, i.e. more space where it's actually used, and then we solve the objections. That's what R&D is.

What is all this nonsense about a 'perched water table', we're talking about a grow bag not a giant field.

You concept “more space where it’s actually used” is incorrect. Plant roots seek water and nutrients and will move in any and all directions they can. Shape doesn’t matter.

fabic pots are shaped like they are because it’s cheap to manufacture, easy to empty and fill, you can water effectively, and hold their shape “relatively” well because the force should be about the same on all sides.

let’s say your premise was correct and plants didn’t use the top majority of the growing container…..so what? Your foot print is the same and growing medium is cheap. Is the money you save on dirt going to offset the increase cost of the bag construction and MORE importantly offset the extra time it will take to water those pain in the ass shaped pots effectively. I also suspect that the top of this pyramid scheme pot will dry quicker and cause all sorts of problems.

Btw I am all for trying new things…but you are looking for a solution to a problem that doesnt exist….and lots of people have been telling you that. This forum is great for batting around ideas…but you need to accept when it’s not a great idea… people have been posting pictures showing how this isn’t an issue.

@crimsonecho your first two paragraphs are obvious nonsense tailored to arrive at the conclusion you want. If watering the pot through the top doesn't diffuse throughout the pot, then ones medium is not great. You say the word "inefficient" but do you know what real efficiency actually looks like?

I mean when you see an auto that looks like this at four weeks growing in one litre of substrate, does it not make you question your ideas on what is efficient? Does it not make you rethink everything you thought about root structure? This is not hydro, it's just a hand watered plug. Just sayin'.
just because you are incapable of comprehending basic concepts about how substrates and water interacts doesnt make it nonsense my good man

kudos by the way that gal looks pretty unhappy good work.

what about this, does this look "unhappy" too?
i mean you’re making this too easy for me brother. ok it doesnt look as unhappy as the first gals i’ll give you that maybe because it doesnt have any leaves besides the yellowing droopy ones at the bottom.

but either case whats your point? is it “happy” because its sitting on top of a pyramid? because i have plants not sitting on top of a pyramid and they are at least as happy as this one.

My point is that if it is possible to grow a plant in a one litre pot hand watered like a normal pot, that looks like it was grown in at least a 10litre pot, then surely that has got to make one wonder. "if that is possible, then perhaps I might need to rethink what I think I know".

The above plant after a few more weeks of the same looked like this (see below). Does it look like what an unhappy plant might produce? So at least my amnesia while being unhappy is at least happier than my purple haze which looked extremely sad at harvest as you can confirm from the shots below, which according to you is a very unhappy plant.

that doesnt look like it has been grown in a 10lt pot if that medium is 1lt, those buds are not thick enough. well anyway lots of variables there but i’m guessing you like using conventional fertilizers so your medium is basically an anchor for the plant so why not go straight hydro?

either case do your bottle neck idea and see how it works but even from your pics (and many others posted here) you should be able to understand that “roots dont grow in the top soil” is a false statement so your perceived problem based on this false statement does not exist and roots do grow at the top soil its a matter of keeping it moist (most effectively with mulching).

do please start a bottleneck fabric pot grow show thread tho. i want to see the results. use clones, equal amount of medium in differently shaped pots and i’ll watch.

Well it certainly got me thinking, when I saw it, and while I don't use soil, I am interested to see if I can replace this replacement theory - 2.jpegshallow water culture 20Litre double tub with external reservoir, with this little thing. replacement theory - 1.jpeg I'll find out in 8 weeks. So while I don't grow in soil I started to think about how I might do it.

I think you're obsessed with the pyramid idea, and any results you will see through a confirmation bias lens. Just because it works doesn't make it optimal.
