Cutting 5cm off grow tent length

Hi all

straight to the point

im upgrading my grow when these are down, I want a 1.5x3x2.2m grow tent, but myspace will only allow for 2.95m length ways, is it possible to cut the poles that span the 3m length. Has anyone done this ?

for you imperial guys the tent is 5x10x7ishhh and I need to take 2 inch off the length knocking it down to 9ft 10 inches length ways.

I thought Mebys usinga multi tool with metal cutting blade to cut both of the chamfered ends of each horizontal pole. If my maths is right I would only need to cut 12.5mm or half an inch from each end.

I don’t have the tent yet so I can’t set it up and measure it to see if it’s Mebys abit smaller than advertised.

for anyone who might have the same tent and can put a tape on it for me to see the actual length it’s a green qube led cube v lq1530l

They stitch that mylar canvas stuff to a tolerance so that when poles are in, the tent is taught and rigid. Cutting 2" off an end will give you slack to deal with. Just a heads up is all.

Yeah I thought about that, are you saying it might loose structural integrity though? I hadn’t thought of that. I thought I’d just bunch it up in the Center around the Center pole with spring clips of some sort.

There's no reason you couldn't shorten it. You'd likely have to take a chunk out of the middle of the poles though.
You may not even need to. My 3x3' isn't quite 3 feet in either direction.

Why would you think I’d need to cut the middle of the poles? Just wondering.

i had thought taking some off every end and maybe off the couplers would suffice

The ends of the poles slide and snap into the couplers. If you cut that off you lose the connection. Not saying you can't do it that way, but I think it would be less work and better fit and finish cutting a chunk from the center and screwing a sleeve over the cut pole (or inside). Also, you could extend it back later if you ever wanted to.

I had also thought about this and decided I would drill a new hole in the coupler for the little snap lock to come through. I dunno, cutting the Center where I’m gonna hang the majority of the weight doesn’t seem like the route I’m gonna go.

It will lose structural integrity due to the fabric been slack, it will then potentially lean in any direction it feels.
I know this because I once gave an old unused tent to a friend but had packed away the corners in with another tent and couldn't find them.
So I bought some universal corners, plastic ones, result was the tent was an inch shorter in all directions, it was slack, it didn't hold up well and we had to prop it up with bits of wood.
Luckily I found the corners a bit later and installed it all properly. It wasn't fit for purpose otherwise.


Also if your going to cut the ends you will lose the ball that clicks into the hole and you would also have to cut the corners or it would still slide into the same place as its the non chamfered bit that stops it pushing in further.

You'd still have the slack in the tent fabric and you'd have to remove the main zip that goes round from top to bottom all round the tent, then cut out material from the ends where the door zips dont hit.
Then somehow install the zips .

Lot of hassle.

I'd build something from new rather than go through all that hassle.

Thanks for the insight mate, I really hadn’t thought it would of been that big of a deal structurally. Glad u let me know though that could have been an expensive mistake.

The idea is for the tent to fill the absolute maximum of the available space, and then absolutely max that space out. So I’m pretty sold on those dimensions, might need to loose a foot but deffo don’t wanna be down to a 2.4x1.2

That’s what I had thought, all other sides of the tent are gonna be tight it’s just gonna have 50mm play on one end.

I’ll only ever be able to get in the front doors anyways so I don’t care about loosing the function of a side one.

Im fairly handy with diy so I might experiment on an old tent first and see just how unstable the mo

I don't know what type of space you're trying to fit it into but if you did cut it and crammed it into that space I don't see how it could wobble around and lose structural integrity if the ends were being supported. I could see if the tent was sitting in the open with no support on the sides but that doesn't seem to be the case with what you're trying to do.

It’s gonna be absolutely tight to the wall on the back and both sides, it’s gonna be semi permanent too so I could drill and screw poles to the walls too

I just bought the 5x9 with 1ft ext. kit for $480 plus free shipping. Took a while to find the best price.

Looking at the corner pieces, if you take the middle joint, the T , you could probably remove enough of that either side and corresponding pole insert without losing the ball clip. Then drill a new hole.

If your that tight wall wise the only other way it can move is forward, a bit of 2x4 screwed to the wall top end of the tent would stop that I suppose.
As long as it can't move in any direction itl hold weight.
Just have to put all your support bars front to back.

I like the doors on a tent and the vents on the ceiling of the tent provide me some practicality when it comes to ducting etc. I’ve had purpose built rooms before and it’s a lot of work to build compared to dropping a slightly modified tent in

You make some valid/good points. You would need to vent out of the room for temp control if you want to avoid A/C.
