High friends, Potpimp here, using my sock puppet account. I got a new computer and as you all know, porting over all your important data can be a royal PIA. I had set up my RIU account to stay logged in. I've been a member here for 15 years. The powers that be, the admin and globals value our security so much that they can't even give me the email account attached to my account, much less the password. I tried reconnecting the old computer this morning (anyone can see my last log-in) and my computer crashed; it just froze up as I was about to post on here. I yanked the hard drive out and slaved it to my new computer, copied my old browser files over the new but only the new account would come up. I can't log back in and I can't reset my password because I closed that email account. So, it looks like my work here is done. I doubt that I'll continue here; enough is enough. I've made a lot of memories here; made a lot of friends, and one enemy (uncle buck); met several of them, and learned a lot, but I'm not going to continue with this new account. Keep it green!

If you can boot to the original drive long enough to get to the login screen you can usually find your password a few different ways depending on what browser you were using. In Chrome you can go to settings-autofill. In Microsoft Edge you can go to settings-profile.
The method described in this article works for most browsers:

KeePass is a free open source password manager. Passwords can be stored in an encrypted database, which can be unlocked with one master key.
also did the drive fail or the cpu? you can recover most data and restore the new machine using active@ which I used all the time as an IT the free version will do most everything you need to recover your data.

I was referring to stored passwords for autologin in the browser which is what they were doing. You wouldn't need the original email account to request a password reset. They could then change the email account in their account settings once back in.
There is also a file that has all the stored autologin information that can be copied over. The location depends on the browser.

I've used UBCD "Ultimate Boot CD" for years to get in and copy data off of corrupt systems that wouldn't boot up. It's been around for decades. Probably isn't as sleek as Active@ but it's come through for me on many occasions. That reminds me I have a laptop I need to get into that won't boot.KeePass Password Safe

Thanks guys. Due to my low-level status I don't even have the ability to "like" a comment. The admin won't give me the time of day due to security issues, so I guess that's the "thanks" I get for the thousands of hours I spent modding the General, DIY, Nutes, and Grow Room Design & Setup forums for 5 years. I plugged the old drive into the new computer; it's "Drive H", but I can't boot.... hmmm, actually I might can do that if I change the boot drive in the bios. I'll try that right now. If Potpimp posts here, then you know I at least could log in. Getting or changing my password still might not be possible since I don't have that old email addy anymore. Powering down in 10 seconds.

You'd be surprised how much some software DOESN'T give the site owner much control over things like passwords. Many people reuse passwords. So, if the site mod can get it and knows you have accounts elsewhere they might be able to abuse them. Some would start setting up forums just for this.
External hard drives are cheap. Backup frequently. Keep your account information and various 'secrets' on a USB stick.
