Light distance from plants

Us newbies are a pain in the ASS - :-) --I have a Xtrasun reflector and a 1000 watt Eye Hortilux lamp. 6 plants. How close do I put the light?

It all depends... What stage of growth is your plant in? Are you going to dim the light or just move it up and down? Most people suggest 300-350 par for veg... And if you aren't supplimenting co2 anywhere over 500 par... Preferably in the 700-800 par range is really good for flower. Get a lux meter and convert lux readings to par readings....
Anything over 1000 par without supplimenting co2 is just a waste and to be honest not really needed for the average home grower.

Mines in a cool tube, I keep plants at least a foot away. Have definitely burned a few plants. 1.5 feet or so would be ideal for me.

Everyone has given great info. Use the back of your hand to test. If you can hold your hand there for 90 seconds the plant can b there. Air flowed hood helps even more keeping heat away. If they are young give them plenty of space till they are 4 or 5 weeks old If that's your only light. And hey just check often while you find what your plants like. If they are mature they will show signs like turning up leaf edges before they get sunburn
