Advice on cages for training growth

Hey guys

So my outdoor plants are almost big enough to plant into the ground.. Here in SA our plants finish around March and the wind picks up real bad where i am situated in Cape Town.

Last year my plants blew right over, was able to salvage most of it but the bud quality could have been a lot better if I did something like train the plants with a cage to grow nice and low and strong.

I have checked out this article which I think many people will find useful.

Would love to hear some advice from the OG's on RIU, perhaps you have some tips and things to avoid? Iv been advised to leave a gap so that you can work on the inside or lower portion of the branches?

Thanks in advance guys!

use the big hole fencing, not the tiny hole stuff they show in your article

with 3 to 4 posts you can use pig fencing to great effect, there only about 3+ foot tall but you can tie them together with wire twisted around the new layer to build upwards.

You sure using galvanized wire is good? I’ve used tomato cages before but I know galvanized is toxic to weld. Just speculation I haven’t heard or read anything one way or another

i used it once with no noticable effects, never knew it was poisonous. i use steel 2" square holes in it now, but i just wire tied the galvanized up, no welding just tiying up up with the wire

So this is what I ended up doing, bought a roll of this caging which is 1.2m x 10m. Used the good old 2.pie.r formula from high school maths rofl. My maths teacher would be so impressed.

Calculated by having a 50cm diameter it would use around 1.65m length and it turned out perfect, had a small offcut left over.

Definitely expensive but wanted to do it neat and proper! So lets see how things go! As you can see my little babies waiting to be transplanted. I filled the holes with my home made compost mixed with some cheap potting soil from the local garden nursery

I weld a lot ,gal is generally pretty safe just don’t smoke it I guess that’s when it’s toxin but would have to be a stupids high temp , it can flake off with age and get in your buds mabe ‍♂ , you can’t actually weld gal you have to grind the gal coating off then weld

This is true. Welding removes galvanize so the best welded wire and really anything galvanized is all galvanized after welding

I cant help but ask why you feel the need to use those? I see 2 very tall walls enclosing that space to protect them?
