Creating a small cloning box with small led and vermiculite as substrate

I hope this is successful for ya but there is a much better and cheaper way to clone just get rooting plugs and some rooting gel and a humidity dome use a small seedling light and mist once twice a day it works really well I get 100% success rate this way and if you use a heating mat under the humidity dome tray it speeds up the process. I can get roots in 5-7 days in most strains. Now if all these supplies were leftovers you had kicking around then I get it but if you invested in these supplies I think you could have done it little easier and cheaper. I use the small K-cups from my coffee machine emptied out to put my root plugs in that way it holds them nicely in the humidity tray or you can get those tiny cups at dollar store. I tried the cloning machines hated those things took forever to get roots and they had to have a pump running all the time so I find this way works much better
Yes i may just use rapid rooters next time, these were just supplies laying around and i was going to trash all these cuttings anyways, i figured it would be a good time to experiment with cloning

I’m trying to avoid aeroponics for sake of simplicity.
This statement me curious, as IMHO, aeroponic cloning is the simplest method I have found.
You only need to take cuts, put them in pucks, fill the rez with non PH'ed tap water, plug in and walk away for 10 - 14 days.
Nothing else to do.
No hormones, nutes, misting.
A healthy doner plant & a little patience.

Your right, aeroponics looked the simplest once setup, i was more-so saying simpler as in no pumps or sprayers. If i were to do this again, i think im going to go with rock wool, rapid rooters, or build an aeroponics machine. aeroponics looks like the most efficient from research. Thanks bob

Yes like do a dip good idea, is it still a good idea to maybe wet the vermiculite with 200ppm nutrient water and then use regular water from then out?
It might work, but I've not done that or cloned in vermiculite, so hopefully somebody who has will chime in.

Although. I have had years of success cloning in organic fert. enhanced peat blends as well as plain pro mix. Most recent foray was fox farm ocean forest. Worked fine. I've retired my larger aeroponic cloners. ;)

IMHO, buying one is much easier than the DIY route, always chasing some small problem with most DIY.
I recommend the clone king I'v been using one for the last 8-10 yrs with pretty much 100% success rate.
YMMV

I've had pretty good luck with a bubble cloner. Just an airpump feeding stones. Nothing against the whole aero setup but my space is too small for an actual store bought model and the one i made the pump heated the water up too much. I clone in an upper kitchen cabinet (on the floor) which isnt deep at all. My latest diy bubble cloner is 20 sites. Not the fastest rooting but it works.

that’s pretty cheap I’ll probably just grab one of those when the time comes, I only knew about that big ez cloner thing

So I gently rolled a cup to get the vermiculite and plant out without damaging potential roots, and to my surprise it is really rooted. I checked the duds but I must have ripped the roots off last time I checked, so I assume they are all rooted pretty nice.

How long can I keep them small in here? I figure they will die soon unless fed more or put into good media, but I really have nowhere to put them

They should be able to live in the cups for some time as long as you feed them a little bit I would think anyway. The vermiculite holds water really well so just a real light feed every so often they should be fine

I would say overall it was a success, here’s some roots from one of the established cups. Most of them had some pretty gnarly roots but I would say 5/20 failed to root but stayed alive for an extended period of time.
This was a fun experiment and vermiculite worked well. I’m sure if I had better procedure next time I may get them all to root.

I’m just using peat plugs and clonex. No roots yet but 5 days after clipping and not a leaf has wilted. Tent humidity at 90 250w mh at like 6ft. Easy peasy. Just make sure to not cups dry out.
