Understanding and Calculating Nutrient PPM

Renfro is badass. But when I got invited into a chat where he resides called fuck RIU where there was a bunch of noobs circle jerking I lost a bit of respect for all of his diagrams and models

I'd Imagine the Regualar Shark is Renfro.. Which is pretty sad and pathetic to compliment youself while providing an update to your old model.
So you guys can just say hello

Didn't Renfro say he had sex with all types of Women so therefore he can't be racist? Because he loves them all?

Reminds me of Uncle Ben
Um, wow, and no. I am just a random person who has been lurking on RIU off and on for years, and have recently gotten into learning about making my own nutrient blends and calculating elemental PPM of various nutrient programs, and I stumbled upon this thread. I thought the nutrient calculator was an awesome thing, and while I am not super proficient in Excel I am decent enough with it, so I decided to expand upon it.

I used to be active on some mushroom growing/psychedelics message boards, but this is my first screen name on RIU or any other cannabis-specific site.

I am never going to claim to have had sex with many women. I'm polyamorous but I couldn't get women to go out with me to save my friggin' life. LMAO Also, I am not a man. Hope that clears up any confusion ;)

My ultimate goal is to expand this document to eventually include a bunch of the relevant chemistry knowledge (such as molecular weights) that helps break down these nutrient products and other additives into their constituent parts. I want to eventually include recipes for DIY versions of many commercially-available products. I've been working on my own homemade versions of things like Canna Boost, GH Rapidstart, FloraKleen/Clearex, etc.

If anyone has any suggestions or requests, or wants new products added, please let me know! Again, I am NOT Renfro, but I think this is an awesome project, and I'd love to help pick up where he left off.

Sounds great, ma'am(?). Anyways, man, good ideas.
Regarding the DIY versions of commercial products, I'd again suggest checking out that link I sent you. The subject has been pretty thoroughly discussed and there's some info that I think might save you wasting some time, or even change your goal(s) slightly.

Edit: Also, you were supposed to "Dooon't", but you did. All good, though.

Absolutely! I've definitely been checking out the posts by Skybound and also Mister Blah on icmag, and some other spots. I really love the idea of helping to reduce our collective reliance on massively overpriced nutrient blends that are virtually all made of the same 10-20 chemicals or so, and a small handful of unique organic additives (triacontanol, condensed molasses, salicylic acid, etc.). I want to add the recipes along with sources to the ingredients in the spreadsheet.

It all started when I was desperately trying to locate some SM-90. I haven't grown weed in a long time, and honestly I'd never heard of the stuff until recently, but saw tons of people raving about its usefulness as a wetting agent as well as being a great pest/fungal preventative and control. Well, as most who used it know, it was pulled from shelves a few years ago for having undisclosed ingredients in the form of salicylic acid (only 0.47ppm according to the Washington state Ag page where it is listed for having been pulled: https://listserv.agr.wa.gov/scripts/wa-AGRWA.exe?A3=1902&L=AGR-PESTICIDE-UPDATES&E=quoted-printable&P=818&B=--_000_d3b8115525ea4c1a85e64f8c857872dfagrwagov_&T=text/plain; charset=us-ascii&header=1). Otherwise, the stated label ingredients were 5% triethanolamine, 3% sulphonated canola oil, and 1% coriander oil. These things were mostly easily found online, though from what I can tell there's only one place (in Australia) selling sulphonated canola oil, and it sounds like a pain in the ass to synthesize myself. So, if one were to buy a whole liter of SCO (as I plan to), and you wanted to use it all to make up almost a gallon of 10x concentrate, here's the recipe and sources:

Homemade SM-90 10x Concentrate (makes 3.333L)
-----
Triethanolamine - 1667mL
Sulphonated canola oil - 1000mL
Coriander oil - 333mL
Distilled/RO water - 333mL
Aspirin - 20mg (cut an 81mg pill into 1/4 and crush into powder)

Combine all ingredients and mix thoroughly. To make standard strength SM-90, combine 100mL of concentrate and 900mL distilled/RO water, then use at the standard rate of 2.5mL/gallon of reservoir water.

It comes to about $130 for the full batch of concentrate (not counting the cost of leftover ingredients using the sources below, so about $165 total out of pocket), or about $4 per liter of finished product. The whole thing would be enough to treat over 13 thousand gallons of water. :) Should last me about 10-20 years at the rate I'll be growing...

Sources (including estimated shipping to Midwest US):

Triethanolamine - $39.80 / 1 gallon - https://www.makeyourown.buzz/triethanolamine-99/

Sulphonated canola oil - $64.45 / 1 liter - https://www.kraftkolour.net.au/sulphonated-canola-oil-turkey-red-oil

Coriander oil - $59.89 / 12 fl oz - https://www.ebay.com/itm/351564435567?_trkparms=ispr=1&hash=item51dadf906f

81mg aspirin - $1.78 / 120ct - https://www.walmart.com/ip/Equate-Pain-Reliever-Adult-Low-Dose-Aspirin-Enteric-Coated-Tablets-81-mg-120-Count/10403813

It's going to be a couple of months before I can move into a new place and setup my grow so I can see it in action, but I'm excited to give it a try!

I just downloaded version 2.07.1 and I have to say, this is impressive. I have a question that I'm hoping someone can help answer so I understand what I'm seeing.

Dissolving certain salts result in dramatically different PPM's than what are expected.
For example, dissolving 2.93 grams of Calcium Nitrate into 1 gallon of 0 PPM RO water yields 435 PPM (500 scale). The predicted PPM in both this spreadsheet as well as Hydrobuddy is ~ 267 PPM. This is a huge discrepancy and I don't understand.

The following ingredients that I use are very close to what Hydrobuddy predicts:
- Potassium Nitrate
- Monoammonium Phosphate
- Potassium Sulfate

The following ingredients show substantial differences:
- Calcium Nitrate: Actual exceeds predicted by ~ 63%
- Monopotassium Phosphate: Actual is less than predicted by ~ 54%
- Magnesium Sulfate: Actual exceeds predicted by ~ 24%

I have precision equipment. I have used more than 1 brand of product. And I have performed these tests numerous times to confirm (both in isolation as well as within an actual reservoir with all of the salts present). The percentages that I listed above always vary a little but what I said represents the average.

It is because of this that I do not trust measuring salts and I prefer to have individual 1 gallon containers with each ingredient in isolation.

Ultimately, I would like to understand how the gross offenders, such as Calcium Nitrate, is so far off.

Thank you, in advance.

He made a joke that didn't go over well. Bla bla bla. Then he told them to just delete his account.

I talked to him for a minute last night, but it was about football.
He made a racist comment you mean, then got called out, had a hissy fit and asked to be banned. Don’t sugar coat your bfs story.

What specifically would you use it for?
A wetting agent for foliar sprays?
Yes it does that but why foliar spray?
I think it causes more problems like excessive humidity.
Pest control?
I found it to be basically useless in that regard (mites use it to sweeten their coffee :) )
I have used it & found it unimpressive.
I keep it simple now, that's the biggest reason I went hydro.
I adjust NPK 3 times per grow, changing N & P levels primarily between veg & bloom, maintaing around 1300-1400 PPM at a PH of 6.0/6.2.
That works out well in my RDWC.

Is that 1400PPM on the 500 or the 700 scale?

700
That (1400 PPM) is an average of what I use.
I have a 30 gal res for 12 plants that I add water to about every 2 days.
Before I add water the PPM wil be high, around 1500 then when I add an avergage of 5 gallons of water it brings it down to around 1200..
I've had my balls busted for the amount I use, but my plants don't burn & they do pretty good.
Good enough for me at least :)

Without knowing what the environmental conditions are in your space, no one can criticise you. The higher the RH, the higher the EC needs to be.

It looks like you're running around 2.0 EC, give or take and frankly there's nothing wrong with that.

I liked Renfro, he always gave good advice freely and actually knew what he was talking about. I must have missed the how and why of his leaving.
he made a legitimate racist comment flipped the fuck out over it being deleted saying it was a joke and doubling down on it, than went rampaging about censorship in posts and profile posts than asked for his account to be removed , just the typical i cant get what i want so ill stomp my feet about it
