Removed fan leaves, new shoots coming up, genius or idiot?

Hi all, I recently cut some fan leaves off my outdoor plant. My last plant had some bud rot so I wanted to make sure it had airflow or whatever. I’m aware it was probably unnecessary but I was bored.
NOW there’s new shoots growing from where the leaves were cut. It’s acting as if I topped it. I can’t imagine this is normal right? Should I cut these off or have I accidentally created something amazing? I attached a couple of pictures, there’s like 50 of these things.
