1/4 gallon pot grow help

I want to start growing plants in 1/4 gallon pots and I’m looking for the easiest way to do this without nutes. This is a few things I’m considering but I don’t have much information about any of it when it comes to 1/4 gallon pots

NightOwl super soil mix: 2 layers and I’m not sure if it will last a whole photo period grow in such a small pot

Subcool’s mix: will it last awhole grow without needing much and can I plant directly in it without needing a second layer?

buildasoil 3.0: I’m pretty sure this will work in 1/4 gallon pots and will last a whole grow but can I plant directly in it without burning up plants?

coast of Maine stonington mix: I’ve never used this but several friends have and the results are great. Everyone uses 2 layers in a pot and nothing smaller than 1 gallon though so I’m not sure if I could use just the stonington mix without issues.

Any help would be greatly appreciated so I can settle on something and get to growing. I just don’t want to start something and then a few weeks later have to start using nutes. I’m trying to get away from nutes for the next couple grows if possible especially while pheno hunting. I do have all the ingredients for Subcool’s and NightOwls super soil mixes and don’t mind top dressing if needed. I plant to bottom feed the 1/4 gallon pots also if that makes a difference. I might add some hydroton to the bottom of each pot also, but haven’t decided on this yet. Some people say it’s needed others say it’s not.
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read this and have a great weekend. Also, if anyone has anything else that might be a better option than what I listed let me know. I’m definitely interested in other options.

Ive always found that bigger is better for pot sizes. Just my opinion but if not using nutes ld max out pot size if you can. A 1 liter pot is way too small unless you have a good watering system down pat. More roots more fruits! Btw l use a few inches of hydracorn in all pots. This will help with bottom watering. Give a buffered zone for roots. Not let the soil sit in water etc. Best of luck on your grow.

My wife told me bigger isn't always better.

Thanks man! I’ve been growing in 1 gallon and it works out perfectly for what I need. I just want to use 1/4 gallon so I can grow more plants this time and pheno hunt a pack I have. I know the 1/4 gallon will need watering more often so that’s why I’m trying to find a water only mix that will work. I just don’t want to mix up nutes a couple times a day and worry about never being able to leave. I would rig up some type of automated system and use nutes and a reservoir but I have major ph fluctuations with my water and don’t have the time to fill up 5 gallons of ro water with my ro buddy.

Thus the reason for bottom watering, ok l get it now. But ld use something in bottom of pots like volcanic rocks or expanded clay. Wouldnt a tote with 8 or 10 plants work too? Sorry but am trying to help here and environments are different everywhere, so my imput might sound ludicris in your area. Hope it all works out. If it wasnt for no nutes ld say rockwell as you can pack them in close.

Honestly I was thinking a grow bed would work better but would be too difficult for me to mess with the plants. Maybe I’ll mix up some Subcool soil, the autoflower mix I’m using now, get a bag of the buildasoil, and a bag of stonington and start seeds in each kind to see what will last the whole grow. I can always use megacrop if needed or top amend. I was just curious if someone has used a water only mix in 1/4 gallon pots. I’m thinking the living soil would work out the best but could be wrong. I’m not looking to get weight out of the grow or anything, more or less just looking for a male to collect a little pollen from and a female or two that I would clone or run again in a bigger container and pollinate.
