Sex and Regular Seeds

I had some bad luck last year germinating old seeds collected from previous pot purchases. So this year I planted extra seeds to ensure I would have enough female plants to grow outside on my deck. I ended up with 14 plants - all grown from regular seeds. There were four different strains: Durban Poison, Thai Sativa, Denali and Manitoulin Dream. I assumed that about half of them would be male and half female. To my wonder and surprise I ended up with 14 female plants. I understand that this is possible but it is also highly unlikely assuming each plant had roughly a 50% chance of being male. Can anyone explain how this happened? Do you think it was something I did? I germinated the seeds using the paper towel method in April. I used Dutch Science Seed and Root Starter and then Grow Girls Grow for the veg stage. They were started under a blue grow light and then moved outside into utility pails in mid May. BTW I gave some of my seeds away to a friend and although he only started a few seeds, one of them was male.DSCF0384a.JPG

As for luck: If I flipped a coin 14 times, the odds of getting 14 heads is one in 16,384. So maybe I should buy some lottery tickets.

I'm not sure what you mean by "bag seeds". I do know that all the seeds were advertised as "Regular" seeds when I purchased them. The Denali seeds come from Erbaceous. The Durban Poison came from the Canada Seed Bank. The others from Uncle B's Chile's and Etc. https://www.unclebschilies.com/. Uncle B sells 10 seeds for $6.50 so they are quite a bargain.

You had said im your original post that these are seeds collected from previous pot purchases. That is what bag seed refers to.

There's some bit in this one guys book about temps (along with a bunch of other things related to stress imo) influencing the sex of seed during germination. But I can't recall which way it goes.

Maybe they had a really stress free life from the beginning. Either way go buy a lotto tix :blsmoke:

Don't get er concussion on that wall there bud :blsmoke:

* EDIT I'm not saying that's why he got all female plants, beyond luck, I'm just saying there is info out there for this thing

I did read somewhere that the blue grow light improves your chances of getting females, so I think there is something in what you are saying.

Sorry I mislead about the "bag seeds". This year's seeds were all purchased as I described.

Hell yeh. I'm able to use those reaction buttons now. Cool deal.

There are multiple influence factors that people have written about but all of them imo are meant to merely improve your chances. And many if not all techniques seem to relate to reducing the amount of stress on tiny plants. No magic tricks for all female plants though.

Beyond that the pic is kinda far away but... Some good looking plants :blsmoke:

Thanks AJ. Second year growing in containers on my deck. I learned a lot from the mistakes I made last year. Still making some, but generally the results are already better this year. I had some plants with 'V' leaves, but that went away. Then I had some round brown spots on some leaves, but after removing them, they didn't come back. Currently I have two plants with brown tips only on the newer growth at the top of the plants. They are now growing slower and are shorter than the others. (see photo). Any advice?

Could be a dumb question but I have a few..

Is there drain holes in those buckets? Did you let them get real dry at all? Also what's the medium?

Just for shooting purposes;
Brown spots may have been CA/MG or a PH value correction was in order.
The tips look like it's either seen a drought and got wet again or it's been over fertilized a bit stunting it's growth..

Not sure if I can help but sure can try :blsmoke:

So I take it you're not familiar with that little bit on info. It's ok I was talking to the OP anyways
Heres the straight truth. Not everything you read on the internet is accurate. So many people think off the cuff info is good.

Things like but not limited to:
Cut your plant when 75% of the pistils are browned.
Using a bloom booster is a good idea.
Flushing rids the plant of nutrients

And so on.

My point is simply dont take info read on the internet as the bible of growing weed.

Oh hey. What's up again? Thanks for the pro-tip. With your point being I should just burn passed you also... or? :blsmoke:

* EDIT I never even read (past tense) the info off the internet. You can see in my first posting.

Drain holes - yes. I covered the holes with a thin layer of peat moss to keep the soil from leaking out when filling the pails. I have been waiting for the plants to wilt slightly before I water, but I suspected that I was giving too much water when I water, so I am giving less now. I noticed that the soil was still moist 4-6 inches deep when it is dry above this, so I was concerned about over watering. I am using the premium all purpose Pro-Mix. I only added some worm castings when transplanting the little ones into the utility pails. I have two sizes of utility pails and the problem is only in the smaller (yellow in photo above) pails. I know the larger ones hold 19 liter. The smaller ones must hold about about half this much. The Denali in the smaller pails are only supposed to grow to about 3 feet in height. I have been using Dutch Science Grow Girls Grow sparingly. I mix 1 tsp into 1 liter of water and share it amongst eight plants and then add some additional water to the plants. When I contacted Dutch Science they suggested mixing enough Grow Girls Grow to water the plants completely. So I suspect 1 liter is not enough for a watering. I apply this mix every second watering or about once per week depending upon the weather. I was planning to mix more nutrients next time I water. I suspect that I may have been overwatering the yellow pails since they have been staying moist longer than my other plants (including my vegetables btw).

Your plants shouldn't wilt before you water again. Good watering practice is key. Over dry then over saturated is no good.

OK nice they are draining. Unfortunately not familiar with that soil or nutrition. Only the BX and HP which is probably going to be a bit different than the premium bag you have...

But the good news is that you're already thinking about everything. So there isn't much help I can offer you. You could be spot on with the overwatering thing so keep up with the watering schedule but maybe not let them dry up as much... Just keep it growing

Is there a journal for your cool deck grow? :blsmoke:
