Would I be able to do this with a 68F and 48-50%RH closet? I want the same as the OP, a long and slow dry...but without a little humidifier in there it gets to 41% and a little lower so im worried it'll dry too fast. Would I be able to go 2-3wks at 50% with the humidifier or should I trim it up at a certain time before then? All drying of course not curing...
My closet is dialed in to stay at about 60-65F and 50-55%RH so it's not very far off from what you have going on... sometimes they hang for 5 days and they're ready, other times they hang for 7-10 days before they're ready... I check the buds daily when hanging, and what I'm looking for first is the buds to be dry on the outside... then I'll try to peel back an average size bud and when its ALMOST able to snap off the main stem I'll buck down into a paper bag ... from there i monitor them closely ... I'll usually leave the bag open for a few days then close it up and open a couple times a day and move everything around... some people don't use paper bags, they just hang until they're happy then buck down straight into jars... I've done it that way plenty of times, and with huge harvests that all come in at the same time, it certainly can be much easier... but I find I get a much slower, controllable dry with the paper bag, and it allows the moisture to balance out across all the buds equally
In the end, I think the key to understand is that there is no magic number of days to hang, it's completely dependent on the environment, air movement, size of the buds, etc ... I've only chopped one plant so far this season and it hung for 5 days, and has been in the bags with the top open for 3 more days now ... from what I can tell I'll probably be closing it up later today and they'll end up in jars sometime early next week
