I have a related question to this, i picked up a 300 watt cfl a while back but after getting it home, the mercury/cfl says that it does not come with a ballast and must be ran in a specific philips fixture intended for a type of security system. It has a mogul adapter on it, looks like any other cfl, does it really take a ballast or can i just wire it up to a mogul socket on a 110 circuit?

You NEED the ballast. I've never seen a real 300watt cfl that had a ballast built on to it. Also use the ballast that they say to, all the manufacturers are different; especially the security system ones. It's not just like hps lights where you can mix and match the ballast.

I just bought a 300w CPL from Home Depot. It was around $16. They come with an integrated ballast so you dont need one for it. You can use it in any fixture in your home. They dont recommend any enclosed fixtures I assume due to heat unless it is outside.
I just screwed mine in a regular table lamp and took off the shade.

I tried using this with a portable lamp but it did not work. I think portable lamps only accomidate up to 150w safely anyhow.

I am going to need to buy sunglasses because this thing is BRIGHT! If I dont turn in off when I am near it I get blinded and see spots. lol

Easy to use and throws off 4200 Lumens. Not bad for $16. I'm glad I came across this. Saved me hassle and money.
I took some pics of it.

I found one that is 45 watts=200 and says it is 6000 lumens. Is there a reason why it would have more than a larger one?

picked up 2 at the depot for flowering also they have some hoods with alil hammering time on the back end of the hood you can get the 300 watt cfl in which is what i did :hump:
