Iinfluencing plants to become female?

I have heard that before the first 3-4 weeks of growing that you can influence your plants to become female by putting a banana or apple near it in its pot. Supposedly the gas released by the decomposing fruit helps the plant to become a female. I'm not sure if this is true but most people who have used it have 100% success. Anyone try this and is there any truth to it?
