Is it possible to identify a strain still in veg?

Short answer is no, it's not. Even in flower, things like smell and leaf structure can give clues to the genetics, but you'll never know what you really have.
I guarantee you half or more of the claimed lineages are false or misrepresented, and not in a nefarious way. You just can't know after all these millenia what is what anymore.
One of the things I hate about the recent genealogy craze is they NEVER go back far enough in time to actually know anything, and in fact, going back too much destroys the whole point of genetic identification.

Hmmm...IMHO unless one is the actual geneticist, it is nearly impossible to decipher strain. Even seeds bought through a bank can be different from what was purchased. I love the many "Can someone identify this bag seed strain?" threads, always worth a little snicker...
