Does are has anybody ever harvested their plants based on the pistol colour?
Oh sure people harvest based on all kinds of things. Was it great when they did is another question.

In general, in my limited experience outdoors and now indoors once the pistils turn and start contracting towards the cola in great numbers, then it is probably time to at least evaluate if it is close to ready. Generally people do that with trichome shots looking for a certain ratio of clear/milky/amber trichome heads. Although this varies according to the strain. Many will swear that they may like almost no amber on their high sativas etc.
Certainly they are an indicator. As no plant is the same I think you have multiple indicators including the way the bud looks itself, the pistils turning brown and pulling back in towards the cola. Trichomes and there is also the overall health of the plant. Sometimes people get deep into flower where they could go another week but maybe they had been flushing a while and hadn't fed near enough.

I'm still new to this to, it's my first time, more of a trial and error but am happy with how they got so for, they have been in flower 8 weeks this Thursday, and it's an auto with flowering time of 8 to 9 weeks, well I have just been reading about the pistol colour which I had not heard of before, not for harvest anyway, I'd say they are about 70% are so brown colour, but trichomes are like 60/40 so I'm not sure which to use to determine the harvest

Usually unless it is quite the Sativa or fox-tailing a lot and constantly producing more white pistils I would say you have a week or two more to go without seeing a picture. Post some pictures.
