Honestly I’d pay to get good reliable meters Hanna is my go to. cyco ph up and down are stro than any other I’ve used and a cheap jewelers loop is a good investment.

The only issue is the reliability of those cheap pens. Not to mention some of them you need a screwdriver to adjust. I’ve tested those against my meters and with strips and they rarely stay good for long.

I got vivosun ph and ec pen from Amazon for pretty cheap. I also got a bluelab guardian. The vivosun meters run pretty consistent with the bluelab. Imo, like with anything, how you take care of it will determine how long it lasts and how well it'll do it.

The cheapo tds pens work good (get 2 of the $10 ones to double check the reading), however the cheapo PH pens are unreliable. For a loupe, may I suggest the Belomo Triplet, a fine piece of Soviet technology made in Belarus. Now for a PH test kit, either to hold you over, or to double check your pen, I'd suggest the Sera brand, for aquariums...it's so much better than the hydrofarm kit it's not even funny.

I have 3 pH meters. All unreliable. But the roll of litmus paper never needs calibration and is more than adequate for our purposes. Hanna meters. Used in reference labs around the world. Blue is stupid expensive and again unnecessary. Buy calibration solution when you buy your EC/PPM meter.

Stupid expensive, but smartly accurate and totally necessary in dwc. I couldn't have done a run without it..... calibration solution and kcl storage solution with regular cleaning, calibrating and storing in solution is all you need even for cheap ph meter.

I’ve had two Hanna Primos including the model with the probe on a cable. That rocked running a room full of DWC buckets. Now I have a Hanna DiST handheld. Stuff is made in Romania. Really durable.

And I still use litmus paper. You can’t beat it. I blew off pH meters when the third one couldn’t maintain calibration.

I give hanna props! I went with the guardian, because I heard it was made to be left in hydro. I don't know how true that is, but I fell for it. Lol

I hear ya! I do regular maintenance on my probe and it holds up against paper test. Definitely need the meter for dwc. Values change quick and I couldn't imagine having to do tests a shit ton of times everyday! Lol

This new one is more a heavy duty consumer model. No problems at all. Maintains calibration really well. Built to be carried for sure. But easy to operate.

Even out of hydro they’re useful to help you accurately measure your feeding and gradually increase your feeds each time knowing exactly what the EC is.

However you don’t have to buy the 5. The #1 will do what most people need. About half the price of the 5.
