Indoor Garden Bed

Hey I was thinking of starting a garden bed indoors. I would start with a 5x4 ish area and expand as needed after. Id mainly like to hear from people who have done this. Im currently running 20 and 30 gallon pots and im just wondering if making the switch would be worth it. Also how deep is recommended? My current pots are 16 inches deep so I'd say that's a minimum. Maybe 24 inch deep bed and fill 16-20 inches?? Living organic soil. If more information needed ask away

Wider is better then depth, can't remember what thread i found that bit but it allows for more surface area.

I grow in a 4 x 4 fabric bed, it’s like 12” deep and it was best thing I’ve changed in garden as of late. Less watering, plants don’t fade out as quickly as they do in individual pots etc. everything is more forgiving in the beds it seems. Only downside of growing in the bed is if your popping seeds and screw up presexing. I sow seeds into 50 count trays and then into 1 gal nursery pots. Most of the times the plant will get mature enough in the 1 gal to confirm sex but every once in awhile a male will sneak through and I’m left with a hole in the canopy. Regardless, the bed is way to go.

Good luck

What do you think causes the plants in a flower bed to not fade as quickly? I ask bc I’m debating on you one big flower bed instead of like 4 25 gallon pots.

I saw this in my veg garden this year.Same plants the ones in the ground compared to the potted ones.My pottedd ones had better soil too.

Yea I think it is mostly due to the simple fact that the roots have more soil available to them as a bed is going to utilize the space it is in more efficiently than if you put pots in the same footprint. Also I personally believe that the plants do better when they interact with each other in the root zone.

25 g work was well for one plant no til containers. I'm doing 4 x25 in my small room, although it's only becauseof lack of planning and time. If the option is available I would have a set up raised bed. I like to imagine the planets take comfort in each other when grown together. They get to know their neighbors, hang out for a BBQ. Borrow each other eggs and milk when out....

Yea, I veg my plants most of the way in 1 gal pots. Transplant them into the bed and wait till the canopy fills out to my liking then flip into bloom, usually around two weeks after transplant. I typically only grow regular seeds so pots are kind of a necessity, but also vegging in the pots allows the bed to get a break in between runs. Let the ammendments and compost I add do it’s thing.

O for sure!! Other then the normal cover crop options I've seen people do brocalli, radish and even beets.
Well if you're interested I decided to make the leap. Ill be posting updates this week of the process. Just need to decide if I wanna keep my plants in a 4x8 tent and fill that with soil or if I ditch the tent entirely. The tent would offer some protection from pest and make odor control easier.

One step at a time haha. I just sourced my soil and ill grab that tomorrow. 27 cubic feet of soil will fill my 5x4x16inches deep container. Going to build the edges up 24 inches on the container. Will fill the bottom with some kind of stone to elevate the dirt for air at the bottom of the soil. Making my own soil will come in just under 300 excluding additional amendments which I already have. Im going to build an irrigation and reservoir system that's going to link into my 180 gallon aquarium. Pretty excited. Would be nearly impossible to assemble my big tent in my space so ill build some walls.

I'll make a new post either tomorrow or the following day and link it here for you guys to follow. I'll have my next run in this bed for the start of the new year.
