First Impressions of LED COB Redwood-VS

Nobody was claiming that LEDs were not hot, although they are much cooler than HPS. LED does not cause more stretch and they have more usable light. Guy you got everything wrong.
Less light less heat unless you have developed colder light. Most are replacing a 1000w with 600w and thinking it cooler and better yeilding when their 1000w grows sucked and less light was the solution to nicer plants. There's a lot of threads like that about, isn't that where you got that stretch from as overlit plants don't stretch much.

Guy I have grown with HPS for over 20 years and people hate it when I say this which is stupid, but I have made millions at it. I know a thing or two about growing plants and using the equipment. Unless you have grown with the newer LEDs then you are not speaking from a point of experience so you don't get any respect for your opinions from me, especially not after making false statements. move on.

The heat is determined by wattage, 1 watt = 3.412142 BTU.

"as overlit plants don't stretch much.

I have 600+w of cobs in a 2x4 and messing around with far red has given me quite a few super stretchy plants especially with sativa hybrids. Even plants that are getting maxed out DLI will stretch plenty depending on spectrum.

Guys I didn't get stretched plants in a bad way, they just grew bigger than I was expecting during the stretch. Nodes were not elongated. Of course with any tall plant the problem is light to the lower sites so that is a training issue and why I topped - lollitoped - and scrogged this time. I had read on these boards that the newer LED and the full spectrum kept them shorter, but was not my experience.

The big difference I see is that the plants start flowering earlier and develop faster under the LEDs compared to HPS but that has not translated into maturing any faster which I find odd. But time from cut to flowering height is the same. Buds are much bigger than I was expecting. I was expecting quality smaller buds and I am getting donkey dicks.

New light comes Thursday, new cuts are ready today. At the moment I have an abundance of lights to be honest so I can wait till Thursday. I have 2 lights that I normally use for mothers and small clones; a 8 bulb 6500k HO t5 400something watt, and a 8 bulb LED 4000k light (t5 replacement bulbs). I bought the LED replacement bulbs to cut down on watts and my t5s were blowing all the time, but I'll be honest, I trust the t5 bulbs for veg more. I don't know if it's the difference between 4000k and 6500k but the plants always look better under the T5s. Maybe somebody knows why?

Any light gurus out there have any theories on why I don't like my LED T5 replacement bulbs? Here is a link to the ones I bought https://www.amazon.com/Natural-100-277V-Ballast-Dual-End-UL-Listed/dp/B07P8VSPBD/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=4ft+24W+T5+High+Output+LED+Tube+Light,+45.75",+F54T5+Equal,+4000K+(Natural+White),+Clear+Lens,+3300+lm,+G5+Mini+Base,+100-277V,+Ballast+Bypass,+Dual-End+Powered,+LED+Shop+Light,+UL-Listed+(12-Pack)&qid=1602426861&s=hi&sr=1-1

Because they are 2000 lumens less than a standard T5 and have a much narrower spectral distribution.
Finally someone who is trying these T5 replacements.
Can you tell us what your experience has been swapping straight from a T5 Fluorescent Lamp to these LED replacement Tubes? :peace:

I have them side by side and the plants under the LEDs tubes don't look as lush as the ones under the t5s to me. I feed them the same thing and that could be the reason, I think you need to supplement for cal-mag a little more under the LEDs which I have heard but haven't really practiced with my mothers/cuts. So for the past 6 months or so I have used to as my backup, just some floor space to keep plants alive but ideally I want to bench the T5s because the light is 416 watts compared to 192 watts for the LEDs. I know LUX meters you have to take with a grain of salt but the LEDs actually read higher at the same height. Once the new Model 4VS comes I am going to do so and will be able to tell you more in a month or so. The idea is to use a smaller tent to dry and veg and pull the mothers out to put under the LEDs when I am either drying or pre-vegging for the main tents.

Do you have any photo's comparing the growth under the two?
Any notable difference in leaf texture, structure, etc?

So my new light came today. First thoughts are that I am surprised that the 4VS has 2 cords to plug in compared with the one for my redwood-vs. I think that would have been a nice little extra for the light. Also the spacing between the cobs is closer than with the redwood-vs and I wish they kept the same spacing for my application with my tent but I am sure that it's designed perfectly for a different size tent. Am excited to try and shave some weeks off of my cycle with this new veg tent though.

so this is what happens when I use those t5 led replacement bulbs. Lush plants after a week show yellowing from edges and wrinkled leafs. Basically it looks like a nitrogen def but with plenty of food. I throw them back under the ho t5 and the look lush again in a week.

Great write up man, I love Timber! Got my first a little over a year ago and after that I never looked at another light company when wanting another light. I kinda started collecting them lol.
Just got an HLG but a cob light was the other option. Though I was looking at optic.
Can timber be used for full cycle grow? I am on the website and it’s giving me the option to pick color temp.

how/which one is used for cannabis?

A lot of useful information on this thread for a new grower. Thank you!

If I am understanding correctly, what do you mean ho t5? What’s the difference between the t5 replacements you had them under (that caused sysmtpoms) and the ho t5 used to resolve the issue.

What color temps did you go with?

Hello @DaFreak

Thank you for the post. We did temporarily run out of the 2:1 Y-splitters for that unit. We didn't want to hold up shipping your light so it shipped with x2 regular cords instead. Please drop us an email at [email protected] and we can get one of those sent out to you.

The 4VS is designed to cover a 3x3 to a 3.5x3.5 area - if you need assistance with changing that let us know and we can assist as well.

Have a good day.

Regards,
Dan

Well I am glad that was the choice you made because I had everything timed to arrival and another week would thrown it off. Most people can't get customer support for lights it seems and here I am getting it and not even asking. Money well spent. And I am totally nitpicking too. Light is awesome. this is my 4th and final. I got these in my tents and temp/humidity controlled exhaust. I feel like I am driving the Porsche of grow tents.

I got the 3500 for the full grow and it works. I got the 4000k afterwards for vegging

High Output t5 are the fluorescent bulbs that are I believe 52 watts a bulb for the 4 footers.

As to the reason the led replacements do this....I have no clue. If I didn't know better I would guess it's a pH thing but put the same plants under the t5s and they get lush again. I've seen this at different heights. I've read people who claim LED requires more mg but again I don't know if this is true or not. I feel Lucas Veg Formula should have enough of anything the plant would need.

Thanks for the reply! And I think customer support should definately be a factor when investing hundreds of dollars into something. Especially lights for growing, it’s one of the main components. Why not get the support for it. And I can attest to that! I had the research everything on HLG and there’s still some specs I’m not sure of.

but after posting on this thread, Dan from timber hit me up and laying it all down for me, such as benefits of cob vs qb, the different options of color temperature and what their used for, what items they have that my space will best support and more! So I don’t even have their product and I’m getting CS. Think that says a lot.

stuff to keep in mind thank you!
