I recently started growing again I used to use metal halide and high pressure sodium when I was growing now they have LEDs I just wondering the growth rate comparison compared from HPS to the LED

That’s a impossible question to answer. How many watts on each. What type of leds. I mean if your running 135w of burple vs a 600w hps.

The led,s have got me curious, if I thought I could get the same crop with less heat I could be tempted though the price raises an eyebrow at $400/500 for the one in the link.

Cmh is another I'm curious about, the day I bought my de hps the chap was going on about Cmh but it was new at the time and I wasn't interested, if they've proved themselves I'd be interested in that now providing I'm going to see a reasonable increase in yeild?

Which is better? Neither. But you will find those that will go on and on about how some of us using HPS are stuck in the past, wasting electricity, blah blah blah. But I'll continue to use my $135 setup rather then spend $500+ to replace a light that grows excellent weed.

Both will grow decent weed but you'll end up paying much more to get an LED comparable with an HID. You can get a 600 watt HPS/MH setup with sealed hood for $135. It will likely cost at least $500 to get a comparable LED. One thing you do not want to do is buy cheap junk LED lights. The purple garbage should be avoided. If you go with an LED spend the money and get decent equipment.

CMH is not a bad option. I've never used one but some claim they are great and from some of the photo's people have posted of their grows CMH definitely grows good weed.

I use an HPS because I'm not into spending what it costs for a comparable LED. I run my light at night during off-peak hours so I'm only pay about 0.4¢ per kilowatt hour. Any electricity savings from LED lighting doesn't matter to me because it would take me years to recover the higher initial cost of LED. And growing in an unheated garage during the winter I welcome the heat generated by the HPS.

@xtsho Thanks for that run down on the some of the pros and cons, I'm paying 17.6p per unit 0.24$ but I've not got 400/500 to spend and I'm all kitted our with the full mh/hps range of bulbs including double ended, and it's purely for personal it would take forever to pay itself.

Cheers SD Thumbs

It's good to see actual points instead of just saying the other system sucks.

I'll list my reason to go led: I grow in a 2x4 and HID doesn't really work that well in the space. I've run 315 cmh and 600w hps before. I built a very nice fixture for ~500€. That's like an ounce of weed on the street here so I don't really care about the price and I think minimizing my electricity consumption is sensible even if I can afford the bills (0.15€/kwh). In the future I may build a blurple to bring down my consumption even more.

I've been using metal halide (400 watt veg) and hps (600 watt bloom) for years.

A couple months ago I got a 300 watt LED light. White leds with extra blue, specifically for veg. This thing is awesome. In veg it totally blows my 400 watt metal halide away. Faster growth, thicker stems, huge fan leaves all for less electricity and with less heat.

I've been growing in a 4 x 4 tent and my 600 watt HPS was theoretically a little underpowered for that area. I've just been reluctant to jump to a 1000 watt light because of the heat. I was able to hang the 300 watt led in the tent next to the air cooled hood for the hps and it worked great. The plants loved the extra light, I could see the leaves reaching for it. It only raised temps in the tent a couple degrees.

I only had the led light in the flower tent for 3 weeks (week 5 to week 8) and it bumped yield up +2.5 ounces over my average, so it's pretty much paid for itself.

Anyway, I don't know that the new LED stuff is "better," but it's certainly useful and I think some combination could be ideal.

I personally think hps but this is because the most I've spent on a led was £350 and didn't produce half as much as my hps. So I'll go with the hps unless you have the £ to get decent leds or you will be wasting your time/money

If I was going to go with LED I’d bite the bullet and look strongly at Gavita. I use CMH 315 and it’s good for 3x3.
