I had read things that people had filled the 5 gal res totally full and no worries. I'm kinda OCD with trying to grow and get it right. At least the basics for what I have so I can branch out. Have been smoking for close to 20 years never grown before. It is fascinating to me. Thank you everyone for your input and helps I appreciate it.

Correct.
Like I said.......as long as you have roots and the airstone is putting out oxygen bubbles.......water level won't matter.

I have all of it, the only thing that helped was lowering the water. Idk

You can drown plants in DWC, you saw it 1st hand

They look perky now. Keep the water level lower. I like to have it 3-4 inches under the net pot. And once and I while you can splash water on the roots. It’s best if your air stone makes little bubbles that POP onto the exposed roots.

Bonus: I take some Azos beneficial bacteria and sprinkle them on the exposed roots. It’s the perfect environment for them, not soaking wet. Not too dry.
