Brits used arse because it rhymes with horse, if you drop the H as most lower class did. It allowed them to say, "Is his Lordship going to get off his arse? Horse and arse were pronounced the same way.

I never heard too many Americans use the term. My parents were from outport newfoundland and arse was used exclusively! On me too, get off yer arse and mow the lawn! I don't keep dogs and bark too!

You Canadians are so counter culture. As a kid I used to like to mispronounce words to get a reaction.

The word is ass.
There really was an old Mr. Bobbit, another cultural relic when I was 5 or 6 and he was a fierce one too! He really did speak in dialect like that too, he must have been 80 in 1965, so he's had his formidable years in the 19th century and I had mine in the last one. How old are you? My dad was born in 1911 and my mom in 1916 my maternal grandmother died as a young woman in 1918 of the spanish flu. So cultural change takes time! As a famous scientist once said, old ideas die off with those who carry them, other things too I imagine.
